South Carolina has always been home. No matter where my stories, songs, and guitar have taken me over the past nearly 50 years, I have always come back to her. She is in every line I write, every song I sing, and every dream I dream.
This week, I was given the incredible honor of being named South Carolina’s Poet Laureate by Governor Henry McMaster. The appointment is beyond humbling. Since the position’s inception in 1934, it has been held by only six poets and storytellers before me, making this an honor I hold in the very highest regard.
I have dedicated my life to storytelling and the arts, and I look forward to shining a light on the poets, writers, storytellers, songwriters, dreamers, and voices—past, present, and future—across our beautiful state.

Sharing yet another reason to join us on May 23rd at Where I’m From.
As Poet Laureate, I had the chance to work with Kershaw County high school English teachers and librarians on something we called “Young Storytellers of Kershaw County”.
We asked young poets, songwriters, and writers from our local high schools to submit an original piece about what it has meant to them to grow up in Kershaw County.
And I gotta say… the submissions were truly wonderful. Some really impressive writing from these young folks.
After reading through them, the teachers, librarians, and I worked together to choose a few students who will now get the chance to share their words from the stage at Where I’m From.
I can’t wait for everyone to hear these young voices.

Last night, South Carolina @govhenrymcmaster and First Lady Peggy McMaster were kind enough to invite me to play a few songs at the Governor’s Mansion with Lauren, Pops, Moses & Wayne on sound.
It was a beautiful evening in the capital city.

Warning. If you go to the humane society “just to look” you may go home with not 1 rescue, but 2.
We’re less than 24 hours into welcoming Maggie & Blue into the fam.
Cooper, the sweetest wise old sage man, is handling it with grace.
Gibbie…: is going to require some time and for the new kids to know who the boss lady is.
I met Blue first. We locked eyes through the fence and he put his head in my hands and wouldn’t look away. He’s gentle, kinda like Coop, but he’s got some puppy energy and he’s terrified by most things. He already seems happy though with lots of attention, food, his cozy crate, training and walks.
Maggie is a bit more reluctant, but she will come up to me and just put her head against me. She isn’t food motivated, but she’s definitely love motivated.
I’m doing lots of research of how to integrate the new dogs with our kiddos. But if anyone has tips please let me know. Also have to stop Maggie & Blue’s habit of jumping and counter surfing. Blue has also tried to jump Maggie a couple of times. We stop it before he can. But if he tries that on Gibbie… well.. it won’t be pretty. Hoping redirection and not allowing it will stop that particular behavior.
Anyway, rescues are the best… especially Cooper and Gibbie who are handling this so well, all things considered.
Okay I’m gonna take a quick nap.
