New Mixed Media Works on Paper by Patrick Kyle

A series of new collage-based mixed media works on paper by artist Patrick Kyle.
Littered with stream-of-consciousness observations, half-baked philosophical musings, warped cartoon nostalgia, and inside jokes, HOW TO BE MEAN sees Patrick blending imagery from his back catalogue of illustration and comics with more spontaneous, gestural sketchbook works. These chaotic-yet-familiar collages are assembled through an acrylic gel medium image transfer technique he has been perfecting since his time as a student at Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Through this process, Patrick embraces improvisation, imperfection, and a naive, relatable quality of line, stressing the presence of the artists hand.

I created these nine pieces for AVANT GARDENER, a group exhibition opening at @naughton_gallery at Queen’s University Belfast next Thursday, April 16th as part of REACH 26, the @qubelfast Arts & Sustainability Festival.
I revisited imagery from my 2018 Koyama Press book ROAMING FOLIAGE for these ones - together as a grid, the individual pieces form a bigger, unified image.

Some gel medium transfers on cardboard using test prints from ‘Worm Day’ - a risograph printed zine from last August. Leave a comment if you appreciate tactility.
The two Toads use the power of will to enter a separate dimension where transparent versions of themselves float above. Their appearance is drastically different but there’s a strong sense that they are actually the same. The vision of the transparent toads will stay with them a long time. This is not a joke.
