What do quantum mechanics, David Foster Wallace, and mirror-polished steel have in common? Patrick Hurst’s “Water Series”. Inspired in part by Wallace’s famous “This Is Water” address, Hurst’s sculptural spheres suggest bubbles rising — symbols of shared humanity surfacing through the noise of contemporary life. Water VIII (2024) is 316 stainless steel, nearly 4 feet tall, and 1 of just 5 in this unique series. It invites you to look at the world — and yourself — from a different angle. Literally. Images: 'Water VIII' © Patrick Hurst, 2024, 316 Stainless steel on stainless steel base, 47 x 25 x 25 in. === #PatrickHurst #StainlessSteel #OutdoorSculpture #ArtAndPhilosophy #ArtForCollectors

MX3D ArtLab Collection # 18 — Resolution The raw printing trace is part of the beauty of WAAM, but polishing or other post-processing methods are always an option. A great example is Resolution, designed by Patrick Hurst @pathurst : a 1.83 m tall sculpture, fully 3D printed in stainless steel. Its “helical coils” explore the idea of resolution: multiple paths diverging, then converging at a single point. Two mirror-polished faces begin 180° apart, representing strong, opposing perspectives. As they move through time (the vertical axis), they spiral inward and ultimately meet in harmony. Curious if your project could be produced and finished like this? Patrick Hurst’s ‘Water VIII’ features mirror-polished stainless steel spheres that evoke bubbles rising through water—a metaphor for our shared humanity surfacing in a divided world. #patrickhurst Drawing inspiration from David Foster Wallace’s essay “This Is Water” and quantum mechanics, Hurst invites us to see beyond the surface and recognize the marvelous possibilities that exist in our collective experience. See his works later this month at Art Palm Beach, Booth 503. 3D-printed metal doesn’t stop at printing. After production, WAAM parts can be treated like any other metal, offering a wide range of potential finishes and surface expressions. A common first step is sandblasting, which removes residual dust and reveals the printed structure. From there, parts can be polished, coated, painted, or patinated, depending on the desired look and application. The images shown here illustrate the creative possibilities realized by artists and designers. They demonstrate how post-processing can transform raw prints into pieces with unique character. The print is just the beginning; these examples are meant to inspire ideas, not imply that all finishes are offered directly by WAAM. #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

When a project allows for a bold art piece, we create a landscape around it. This corten steel sculpture by artist Patrick Hurst emerges from a soft and thoughtfully considered planting. There is so much more to share from this stunning property, a recent design & build project on Vancouver’s waterfront. What do you see in Patrick Hurst’s “Pixel 3.1 SS”? “The concept of the work is similar to that of a Rorschach inkblot test,” Hursts states. “It is then the perception of the whole that imbues meaning to the piece.” Featured: ‘Pixel 3.1 SS’ © Patrick Hurst, 2023, 316 Stainless steel, 73 x 37 x 35 in (185 x 92.5 x 87.5 cm)

@pathurst ’s “The Tree of Life” animate “phylogenetic trees”, visual diagrams that show the evolutionary relationships between species. These “trees” can also represent social concepts, such as cultures or religions, as well. The further one goes into the tree, the more obscure the progression becomes. Hurst utilizes this form as invitations for people to cultivate an awareness of the world beyond their own personal experience. Featured: ‘The Tree of Life’ © Patrick Hurst, 2023, Corten steel on 316 stainless steel base, comprised of 171 pieces, Signature incised on base of sculpture, 96 x 34 x 34 in (244 x 86 x 86 cm)
