MX3D Art Lab Collection #08 — Entanglement Entanglement is a monumental, site-specific sculpture designed by artist Alyson Shotz ( @alysonshotz ), installed in the atrium of the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences (BTCIS) at Skidmore College, New York( @skidmorecollege ). The sculpture was robotically 3D printed in stainless steel in multiple segments and assembled into a continuous, twisting form. Weighing 340 kg, its hollow structure allows for large scale with reduced material use. The painted surface shifts from gold to green to blue, changing with light and the viewer’s position. Through its geometry and construction, Entanglement crosses disciplines, resonating with the physical sciences, art, and culture. #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

MX3D ArtLab Collection # 17— Hypergrid (Space Exchanger) The Hypergrid screen explores how industrial logic can be transformed into spatial design. Developed in collaboration with @jorislaarmanlab and manufactured by us, the piece takes inspiration from the flowing, interconnected fins of heat exchange systems, reimagined as a large-scale architectural screen. 3D printed in bronze using MX3D’s robotic WAAM technology, the structure could not be realized through conventional manufacturing methods. Rather than assembling individual parts, the form grows as a continuous network, emphasizing the seamless potential of robotic fabrication. The two-tone finish: oxidized black on one side and brushed bronze on the other, adds depth and movement, highlighting the complexity of the geometry from every angle. Balancing function and expression, Hypergrid stands as both a sculptural object and a demonstration of the possibilities at the forefront of robotic fabrication. #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

MX3D artlab collection #01 The Underground Tree Rooted in memory, shaped by technology. The Underground Tree reimagines a chestnut tree once standing in Westerpark. Printed in stainless steel with MX3D’s robotic 3D metal printing, the 3.5-meter sculpture fans outward like a living form. A work that transforms raw steel into a contemplative space, symbolizing cycles of life, death, and renewal. #ArtInMetal #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #MX3Dartlab

MX3D ArtLab Collection #20 – Later Life Later Life is a pair of Corten steel head sculptures, male and female, by artist Rowan Gillespie, each standing at approximately 100 cm. Abstract in form and fully 3D printed by our team, the pieces explore the passage of time through material and shape. A popular choice for outdoor sculpture, Corten steel develops a rich, weathered patina over time, giving each piece a distinctive texture and a sense of natural aging. Pillars Stainless steel / WAAM / 2026 Pillar is a versatile system of stands that draws its geometry from the intersection of architectural typologies and geological formations. Whether assembled as side tables, shelving supports, or table legs, each Pillar reflects a Fabricated Terrain born from robotic paths and the raw accent of molten metal. This collaboration unites MX3D ArtLab, a studio dedicated to pushing metal’s expressive potential through robotic 3D printing, with Erco Lai, an interdisciplinary designer navigating the post-industrial era through poetic fabrication and objects that engage with the logic of the Earth. 📸+🦾 @mx3d_artlab #industrialLandforms #designObjects #interiordesign #exhibition

Artistic, organic, and beautifully sculptural… created through what seems like a highly industrial process: WAAM. This piece is a perfect example of how the visible printing lines become part of the beauty itself, adding a unique visual expression to its root-like organic structure. The Underground Tree currently stands in the heart of beautiful Westerpark in Amsterdam. Shimmering under the sun as people gather to enjoy the spring weather, this monumental sculpture brings an added sense of atmosphere to the park. Don’t miss the chance to see the Underground Tree in springtime, go experience it in person :) See the full project on our website : /case/the-underground-tree/ Art piece by: @studiotanjasmeets , fabricated by MX3D ArtLab #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

A bold experiment from the past… The result is visually striking and has opened up interesting directions for us to explore further. We are still actively investigating more possibilities with WAAM, from structural innovations and parameter strategies to different finishing approaches. Each of these aspects reveals new opportunities to push the process further. Do you have any bold ideas you would like to experiment with using WAAM? Send us a message! We'd love to hear them and explore together😍 Project credit: @jorislaarmanlab #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

MX3D ArtLab Collection # 19 — Dragon Bench As one of the earliest and most iconic projects from our collaboration with @jorislaarmanlab , the Dragon Bench is not to be missed. It was the first sculptural piece created using our in-house developed metal printer. By printing intersecting lines, we were able to create a strong, self-supporting structure. Dragon Bench played a key role in the development of our metal art printing technology. It marked a significant step forward in metal 3D printing, demonstrating for the first time that large-scale objects could be printed using high-quality, strong, self-supporting materials. Today, Dragon Bench is part of the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art (Atlanta, USA), the Groninger Museum (NL), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, USA), and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, AUS). #MX3D #MX3Dartlab #ArtInMetal #MetalArt #SculptureDesign #DigitalFabrication #3DPrintedSculpture #WAAM #Sculpture #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #ArtInstallation #Design #ArtistsOnInstagram#3DPrinting #Metal3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #RoboticFabrication

What happens when you rethink an elevator cart from the ground up? Together with @schindler_group , we explored how design and technology can reshape a familiar object: the elevator. Using topology optimization and robotic 3D metal printing, the project focuses on reducing weight while opening up new design possibilities. The result is a more efficient, customized structure that reflects a different approach to industrial design. Elevate is part of an ongoing exploration into how advanced manufacturing can support faster development and more flexible production. MX3D ArtLab Collection # 18 — Resolution The raw printing trace is part of the beauty of WAAM, but polishing or other post-processing methods are always an option. A great example is Resolution, designed by Patrick Hurst @pathurst : a 1.83 m tall sculpture, fully 3D printed in stainless steel. Its “helical coils” explore the idea of resolution: multiple paths diverging, then converging at a single point. Two mirror-polished faces begin 180° apart, representing strong, opposing perspectives. As they move through time (the vertical axis), they spiral inward and ultimately meet in harmony.
