My first DNF. During my taper for Cocodona 250, I developed a hip issue that I thought I’d mostly gotten under control. But just a few miles into the race, my quad started flaring up, likely from compensating. From there, things slowly unraveled. I tripped and fell twice early on, cut up my knees, and shattered the lens on my camera. Before long, I couldn’t really run the downhills anymore and had to completely adjust my stride, even on the flats. Still, with the help of my incredible crew, I kept moving forward as best I could. I got to share miles with some amazing people, experience some unforgettable moments, and to see some truly incredible terrain. Hangover Trail was easily one of the highlights of the race for me. But as the miles added up, I found myself tripping more and more as I dragged my feet along the trail. A few close calls made it pretty clear that things were heading in the wrong direction. Eventually even shuffling became difficult, and once walking itself started becoming painful, I knew we had a decision to make. With plenty of cutoff buffer still remaining, I left my tracker at Munds Park, mile 190. We grabbed a hotel room, got some sleep, and planned to reassess in the morning. But by then it was clear continuing wouldn’t have been the right call. Obviously not the outcome we came here for, but I’m incredibly thankful for the team around me who gave everything to help me keep this thing alive as long as possible. Sometimes you do your best with the cards you’re dealt, and sometimes you’ve got to know when to fold. Huge thanks to the volunteers, race staff, and to everyone who followed along online, sent messages, or stopped me on course to say hello. It meant a lot, especially during the tougher moments. But seriously, how about that women’s race? #cocodona #cocodona250 #trailrunning #ultrarunning

The Hangover Trail in Sedona, Arizona, is one of the most beautiful sections of the @cocodona250 course. @jpelletier and I ran and hiked 18 miles / 29km out there today. Although Jeff’s hip and quad have been bothering him, he’s still been moving well. #cocodona #cocodona250 #running #ultrarunning #trailrunning

Picked up @jpelletier from Dead Horse and spent the next 26 miles pacing him to Sedona. Very chatty and moving well to start…then the “sleep monster” hit and we had to get a couple of dirt naps in. He has less than 90 miles to go in the epic odyssey so keep cheering him on!

Trekking poles help @jpelletier climb more efficiently, save energy, and stay more stable on the descents. Small tools can make a big difference over 253 miles. @cocodona250 #cocodona #cocodona250 #ultrarunning #running #trailrunning

Mingus Mountain aid station (mile 107) brought a lot of different dynamics to @cocodona250 as @jpelletier continues to grind it out: massages, dirt naps, lasagna and even some basketball!

Mile 107 of 253. Mingus Mountain. A short 5-minute power nap can reset the body and mind during an ultra race like @cocodona250 . @jpelletier catching a few minutes of sleep with @audreelafreniere as his pillow. Only 146 miles to go 😅🤘 #cocodona #cocodona250 #running #ultrarunning #trailrunning

Update from Mile 96.5: The early stages of @cocodona250 were uphill beyond just the elevation gain. After battling through early hip and quad pain (plus a few scraped knees) @jpelletier is on the upswing and heading into the next 100 miles and beyond with @florisgierman pacing. Great work Jeff, keep pushing!

Whiskey Row, Prescott (mile 75) of @cocodona250 @rachel__entrekin rolling through the aid station 20 minutes ahead of first male @kiliankorth . She is looking so strong and controlled. And then @courtneydauwalter smiling and running like she’s just getting warmed up. This race is wild. #cocodona #cocodona250 #ultrarunning #trailrunning #running
