Peek into Black Wasteland — three distinct sets unfold, fusing experimental theatre, live instrumentation, and projection art into a single aesthetic whole. An uncompromising convergence of analogue and digital music, visual arts, and mixed media.
The performance draws together powerful cinematic storytelling about the alchemical transformations driven by humanity's deepest fears and desires. Building on Lychen's Black Wasteland (2025), which examined how symbols and signs participate in the constitution and reconfiguration of the world, it reconstructs notions of Time, Body, Language, and Existence through the lens of a new central proposition: becoming — how the subject generates itself.
The journey begins with the layered liquid light projections of Pat Grimm, intertwined with Reuben Sutherland's performative electronics. This textural landscape then shifts, making space for the dynamic brass and woodwinds of Charlotte Keefe on trumpet and Rianna Henriques on flute and saxophone, their live improvisation set against the striking experimental films of Pierre Bouvier Patron in a masterful interplay of visuals and sound. Finally, the night culminates in two movements from Black Ash — the latest chapter in the Black Wasteland series — conceived through a collaborative dialogue among Hangrui Zhang, Yuchen Li (Lychen), and the Rothko Collective.

“Rooted in the philosophical study of experience itself, ‘Phenomenology’ unfolds as a guided arc: an invitation, a dissolution, a wobble, a reckoning, and a return. Across eight interconnected pieces, the album explores what it feels like to inhabit uncertainty, presence, dread, recovery, and recognition - not as concepts, but as states of being, and rather than offering resolution, Sandscape allow these states to coexist, overlap, and breathe.”
Limited edition 12” vinyl will include a 12-page booklet of artworks by @patgrimm , photographed by @lookashhh and designed by @lucymettyear and @edwinmingard

Pat Grimm and Reuben Sutherland have been part of the Unknown Species story since the very beginning, shaping the visual language of our ambient spaces. Together, they merge analogue projection, tactile experimentation, and a deeply intuitive approach to image-making, from liquid, hand-played colour compositions to richly layered mixed-media visuals.
Pat, an East London–based “visual chef,” creates immersive, liquid worlds through hands-on projection, using colour, light, and physical materials to craft something playful. Her work has appeared at places like festivals Glastonbury’s Shangri-La and event spaces, theatres and churches, always rooted in experimentation. Alongside her, Reuben, known for his work with award-winning direction across music and global brands, brings his distinct language of analogue collage, motion, and rhythm which is rooted in his intricate visual performances practise using zoetropes in AV show as Sculpture with Dan Hayhurst. Together with Pat, they create something truly special: tactile visuals that feel alive and in constant dialogue with the music giving a psychedelic experience of expanded cinema.
