I am delighted to announce I’ve been selected as a winner in the Portrait of Britain award from The British Journal of Photography. It is the UK’s biggest annual photography exhibition in collaboration with JCDecaux. My portrait of racing driver Billy Monger was commissioned by Whisper TV for the Channel 4 programme ‘Billy Monger: Changing Gear’ where he explores how various elite athletes train for the Paralympic Games. I spent the day documenting him at Donington Park where he raced Jonnie Peacock in Toyota Supra's before Jonnie taught Billy how to run on blades. Please do watch it on catchup as it’s a brilliant show. It’s a massive honour to be part of the 100 winning images. Special thanks to the panel of industry-leading judges including Tracy Marshall, director of Bristol Photo Festival; Mariama Attah, curator at Open Eye Gallery and Nicola Shipley, director of GRAIN Projects. "In its entirety, Portrait of Britain 2021 offers a rich and complex variety of work that holds a mirror up to modern society: from quiet, everyday moments to landmark events; dynamic urban faces to eccentric countryside characters, and traditional portraiture to more innovative techniques. In a world fraught with division, portraiture is, in many ways, the ultimate act of collaboration. Perhaps portraiture cannot solve Britain’s identity crisis, but it can help us rejoice in the diversity of our people — and remind us that, for all our differences, there is sameness amongst us, too.” #portraitofbritain #britishjournalofphotography #bjp1854 #jcdecaux #billymonger #photographyprize #portraitofbritainaward

I was approached recently to photograph some @officialgloucesterrugby players being put to the test with cold water endurance in a challenge from shower brand @mirashowers The fun brief was to capture ‘Freeze Frames’ of the players’ reactions to highlight the benefits of cold water therapy. Winger christianwade3 says: “I like to have a shower before bed and do a 30-second count under the coldest temperature before I shut it off. I love the refreshing feeling, and I find I get better sleep as someone who gets too hot at night. It helps me regulate my body temperature so I’m in a good space to sleep. A lot of people shy away from cold water, but once you get into the routine, you’ll see the benefits and realise that the colder temperature isn’t as bad as you thought it was going to be. Work on getting your breathing under control when you’re in there and you’ll soon start to enjoy the experience.” Photographer @patchdolan Client @mirashowers Partner @officialgloucesterrugby Agency @wearebottle Assistant @carliadbyphoto #gloucesterrugby #rugby #rugbyplayer #profoto #coldwater #coldwatertherapy #coldshower #mira #mirashowers #christianwade #coldboost

Enjoying cold water immersion is a ritual for @jfordrob each morning, as he loves the ‘shock’ feeling it gives to the body. The Gloucester Rugby Prop says “You feel amazing after cold water exposure, particularly after waking up feeling groggy with low energy. It gives a great kickstart to the body for the day ahead. Consistency is key to building the habit, even if you’re initially under cold water for 10 seconds. When I first started doing cold water immersion, I recited the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling to ensure I did it for a good length of time. Putting on a three-minute song is also a good way to ease yourself into the feeling.” Photographer @patchdolan Client @mirashowers Partner @officialgloucesterrugby Agency @wearebottle Assistant @carliadbyphoto #gloucesterrugby #rugby #rugbyplayer #profoto #coldwater #coldwatertherapy #coldshower #mira #mirashowers #jamalfordrobinson #coldboost

What an absolute delight, privilege, honour, you name it; when you’re already a fan of a show and you turn up all new and keen you really hope everyone is as lovely as they seem on the telly. It makes everything you do a hell of a lot easier when they are. I was chuffed when @carlpalmerpictures asked me to head up to Stoke to take some shots of the presenters/judges and contestants. We would watch it on a Sunday with my children with playd’oh replicating the incredible pieces so I jumped at the opportunity to be there in person. Everyone is a talented creative wonder. #pottery #potterythrowdown #unitphotography #channel4
