Sir Brett-Livingstone Strong: The Original Artist Behind Michael Jackson’s Dangerous Album Cover
Sir Brett-Livingstone Strong, Michael Jackson’s longtime art mentor and business partner, created the first and original artwork concepts for Dangerous — one of the highest-selling albums of all time.
The album’s cover design began when Michael initially proposed the title Look Out. Inspired by this, Sir Brett envisioned Michael’s eyes as the focal point, peering out from a mysterious armored helmet. The helmet, styled after medieval 12th-century armor, symbolized protection from danger. This innovative design even featured an embossed cutout that could open to reveal Michael’s eyes.
Michael later changed the album’s working title to Wanted, reflecting how he felt his creativity was sought after and celebrated as an artistic icon. Loving the concept of his powerful eyes, Michael kept them at the heart of the design. He felt the word Wanted carried a sense of danger, which eventually evolved into the final title: Dangerous.
At Michael’s request, Sir Brett created additional concepts surrounding the motif of his eyes. These included: • A prehistoric forest in flames, with dinosaurs in the background. • A sunset forest scene where animals wore playful party hats. • A fusion of all the earlier ideas, framing Michael’s eyes within a “time sphere” device.
These evolving concepts ultimately inspired the final carnival-themed cover, with Michael’s piercing eyes — first conceived by Sir Brett — remaining the central focus.
