We didn’t get name tags, which is why I think when I got hit with a “sweetheart” or “thanks love” a lot. Inherently this isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it made me feel like my identity was worthless. I wanted to be recognized for who I was, I’m not nameless and neither are you. Going the extra mile just didn’t hit the same way, maybe I just like people too much to not connect to them. I just couldn’t do that as a server, and it made me hella jaded. Music is the best way I get to be me, wins every time, so grateful I get to do this and be more me. Not for the faint of heart, sometimes orders would pile up so much. Then mistakes would start to happen like orders not going in on time, Togo orders flying through and packed out sections. You start compartmentalizing each step of the process, for me I kept a mental checklist of what needed to happen next, took deep breaths to slow down when I could. Everything was a process and looking back it felt more important than it was, making mistakes I mean. I felt like a failure when I had ten tables, five togos and an order didn’t get in. I definitely got yelled at, cried a few more than a handful of times, wasted away on my break for a 9-12 hour day, but over six years the owner and I got close and the light through the cracks started to show. Eventually I became the manager for a bit, before I left for good. Building a new menu, and some light employee protocol, creating the weekly shift schedule. I think I just wanted to feel like I was going somewhere, but this wasn’t my field. They loved me and a good part of me loved them. But sometimes it doesn’t last, and It Isn’t Love 😊 (but for realz still love the people I worked with, they were great) “It Isnt Love” is out this Saturday, and if you read this far it’d mean a bunch of you gave me a follow on Spotify or any music listening platform you use.
