„New Library Extension“, designed for Hong Kong Polytechnic University, redefines learning spaces through lightness and flexibility. Hovering above the original concrete Metabolist structure, this steel-and-glass addition introduces a striking contrast in materiality and form. Its curved terrace sets the tone for an organic interior, challenging the rigid order of the existing library. Inspired by Prospect Park and Bürolandschaft, the extension unfolds like a forest—fluid canopies and shade structures shape an open-plan environment that offers a variety of study zones. Modular pavilions support diverse learning styles, from quiet solitude to collaboration. Key elements, such as the 20-meter-long suspended table or the floating riser, reflect a spatial choreography that promotes student agency. By inviting users to configure their own spaces, the library becomes more than a place to study—it becomes a landscape of learning. The project is part of the exhibition „Rational Form Making“, curated by PangArchitect @pangarchitect . EXHIBITION 29 March – 14 May 2025 As always, free entrance. Founded in 2010 by Angela Pang, PangArchitect is an architectural practice based in Hong Kong and Boston. The practice develops functional and original design solutions, focusing on the unique qualities of each architectural problem. The studio's two guiding principles are a consideration of the local context and fulfilling the functional requirements of the program. Each project and design results from a methodical inquiry and investigation that questions conventional standards in searches for innovations and alternatives. The dialogue between research and built form balances intellectual questioning and pragmatic solutions. EXHIBITION Rational Form Making. [archive] THE LEARNING GARDEN The long, sinuous table weaves together different parts of the large space, bringing students together while at the same time, through its curves, defining a series of zones. This ambiguity between public and private, openness and enclosure allows for different types of activities and configurations of use. Subtle variations in the height, width, and shape of the Learning Path provide a datum line for students to discover new ways of learning and developing ideas.
