Meet Bonnie Hayslett🎨 Bonnie is deeply involved in her local creative community at Painted Brain, attending several days each week. For her, it’s a place of comfort and self-expression, full of artistic activities that allow her to explore and learn new skills—like weaving small bags from recycled yarn and cardboard on a loom. “When I had my pet grooming business I had to act like a serious business owner. When I took college classes, I had to meet student behavior standards. There was a role for every place, a set behavior expectation. Being somewhere just being, it’s delightful,” Bonnie said. Life has brought Bonnie profound challenges, including experiences of deep trauma and unhealed grief. Over time, she realized she didn’t want to carry that emotional pain to the end of her life. Her journey has been about understanding herself, repairing broken relationships, and finding ways to heal—so she can help others do the same. Art has always been part of Bonnie’s life. From childhood, she was surrounded by creative tools and supplies, which she has used to develop a broad and deep artistic skill set. Although she set aside her creative writing for over 20 years due to a lack of support, she has returned to her passions with renewed dedication. Sewing, crafting, and creating are now central to her daily life. For Bonnie, the Painted Brain community is more than a center, it’s a safe space. Here, she can simply be herself, free from judgment or expectation. Whether engaging in an activity or just enjoying quiet time, she finds joy and peace in the ability to relax and belong. She likens the community to a mental health gym, where everyone, regardless of ability, can come, support one another, and grow stronger. Bonnie is wearing the Active Minds Rugby Polo Shirt, Pre-sale available now on @paintedpath.co

New drop @paintedpath.co ! Introducing the Jumbled Letters Tote Bag The Painted Brain Tote is inspired by the idea that healing is not neat or perfectly aligned—and that’s okay. The jumbled letter design reflects the complexity of the mind and the beauty found in imperfection, growth, and creative expression. This everyday carryall is a functional reminder of Painted Brain’s belief that community mental health belongs everywhere: at the grocery store, in classrooms, at creative spaces, and on the streets. The back print grounds the piece in place, emphasizing Painted Brain’s roots in local, community-based care. Durable, reusable, and accessible, this tote supports sustainability while carrying the message that mental health is a shared responsibility. Shop Pre-sale — link in @paintedpath.co bio

Meet Kyle Ang🖋️ Growing up, Kyle was taught that being loved meant being useful. He often stepped in to care for friends and mediate conflict within his family. By the age of 12, he made a promise to himself that he would never want or feel anything again—believing it was the only way to avoid being a burden or inconvenience. The silence and invisibility surrounding his experiences left him feeling both too much and not enough. Today, Kyle has shifted from simply surviving to deeply understanding patterns in his life, using curiosity as a tool to support others. In 2022, he founded Tiger Tea Zine, a storytelling platform for the Asian community. In 2024, he became a peer support specialist and is currently on the path to becoming a social worker—with the hope of empowering others by honoring their stories and creating spaces where people can be seen and cared for as they are. “In a world where countless voices and systems tell us who to be and how to be, it’s liberating and in some ways an act of resistance to express yourself, what you care about, and to co-create meaning with others who care just as much, ” Kyle said. Kyle’s journey with Painted Brain began through peer support services with Project New Start. From there, he explored creative groups and found a community that values him for who he is, helping him rediscover parts of himself. Through this experience, he learned to create with a focus on connection and joy, rather than the pressure of output or fear of failure. “Creativity and art have always been ways for me to translate experiences that feel too big, abstract and complex. To design, write or turn something that might be overwhelming into something tangible and understandable has helped me feel empowered and less alone,” Kyle said. Kyle is wearing the Active Minds Rugby Polo Shirt, Pre-sale available now. Link in @paintedpath.co Bio.
