Our annual Music Issue centers the artists and storytellers shaping Houstonâs queer creative scene. Cover star Patrick Sims reflects on Love Notes, a new EP that traces his growth as a bisexual Black artist navigating love, identity, and vulnerability. Paul Lunaâs PHASES follows a similar pathâunapologetically queer and emotionally charged, his music speaks to those who often feel overlooked. Gamma Vega, whose electronic pop sound is both hypnotic and defiant, draws on her experience growing up queer in a traditional immigrant household. We also spotlight DJs Chad Guidry, AJ Hernandez, Emily âMLEâ Areta, and Ari, who are building inclusive nightlife spaces where music and identity intersect.
This issue also honors media veteran Deborah Moncrief Bell, co-host of Queer Voices radio for nearly five decades. We preview Aaron Alonâs musical The Chosen Ones, a haunting portrayal of queer teens in conversion therapy, and Vera Drewâs cult film The Peopleâs Joker, returning to Houston this month.
Other features include a look ahead to the 2025 Gay Softball World Series, a visit to queer-owned shop The Feisty Collective, and interviews with local advocates marking Womenâs Equality Day and International Allyship Day.
The issue begins with a tribute to entertainer Bubba McNeely, who passed away in July.
