We found hidden doors in the building, cleaned new territories, and turned on the cinema. @art_rotterdam has left Van Nelle Fabriek and, for the first time in 2025, will settle in Ahoy, Rotterdam-South. De Sportschool is only five minutes away, so get ready for: A time-traveling cinema experience, with a unique film program curated by @semabekirovic the book launch and public talk by @urok.shirhan and the first library whispers of @_sarjon_ sound program. Plus, join us for an open guest studio with @kennethletsoin and grab some food from the Frietvrijdag food truck.

We are proud to present a series of conversations in which @semabekirovic delves deeper into the films with the creators. These are feature films made by visual artists, each approaching filmmaking in their own unique way. From desktop documentaries to experiments in communal script writing, these films radically play with both form and genre. Our newly established cinema in the gymzaal Zuid of De Sportschool will remain in place for the upcoming season, serving as a platform for various creators and curators. Save the date: On May 25, P1, in collaboration with Sema Bekirovic, will host a symposium on the making of feature-length films by visual artists.

‘Eaves' (2025), playing in het Clublokaal. In the site-specific audio installation 'Eaves', Ash Kilmartin and Linus Bonduelle play with the way linguistic meaning and audibility can break down through repetition and spatialisation. Inviting the viewer to become an eavesdropper, their language games wedge words into the shapes of sounds that still wish to make sense, even out of context. This new work was specially created for the program Libraries Are Not Supposed To Be Quiet, curated by @_sarjon_ . It will be playing throughout the entire weekend. Op donderdag 2 oktober gaat de Charlois Fashion Week 2025 officieel van start. De avond begint om 18:00 uur met twee activiteiten: • Voor de deur van De Sportschool (Boergoensevliet 110) staat een patatkraam, waar bezoekers alvast iets kunnen eten. • In Nieuw Charlois (C3 Studios, Huismanstraat 30) opent Iza van den Baar haar tentoonstelling. Zij is een van de geselecteerde ontwerpers en zal haar collectie aankomende zaterdag presenteren tijdens de Fashion Week. Om 19:30 uur volgt de officiële opening in De Sportschool. Hier wordt de tentoonstelling gepresenteerd met werk van de geselecteerde ontwerpers: Arie, Bent Bent Bent, Paco Teepe, Povis, Jelena Bondt Yokolina, Rotterwear, Nada van Dalen en Halte Charlois. On Thursday, October 2nd, the Charlois Fashion Week 2025 will officially kick off. The evening starts at 6:00 PM with two activities: • In front of De Sportschool (Boergoensevliet 110), a fries stand will be serving food for visitors. • At Nieuw Charlois (C3 Studios, Huismanstraat 30), Iza van den Baar will open her exhibition. She is one of the selected designers and will present her collection this coming Saturday during Fashion Week. At 7:30 PM, the official opening will take place at De Sportschool, featuring an exhibition with works by the selected designers: Arie, Bent Bent Bent, Paco Teepe, Povis, Jelena Bondt Yokolina, Rotterwear, Nada van Dalen, and Halte Charlois.

OPEN STUDIO - Meet Kenneth Letsoin @kennethletsoin ! Gymzaal Noord at de Sportschool is our new guest studio and Letsoin is our first resident. For years, the streets have inspired Letsoin’s work, creating site-specific installations and murals made with materials at hand. During his six-month working period at Gymzaal Noord, he aims to broaden his street experience and push his boundaries by transforming Gymzaal Noord with experimentation and painting on large-scale canvases. This development of his practice is supported by the Mondriaan Fund @mondriaanfonds with Kunstenaar Basis. Open to visit from Friday, March 28th! F A M, 2021 Video HD, 03:18’’ [Douche Zuid] ~What archival meaning does a musical piece gain when performed in a living room instead of a theatre hall? F A M is a video work created by Ioanna Mitza and performed by herself and her family, Antoneta (mother), Petro (father), and Aljon (brother) Mitza. The work films the artist playing on the piano the 1st Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier while persistently looking at the camera. The visual poetry that F A M captures is a reflection on all the gaps in the family a prelude can fill. F A M together with other works will be on show 28/29/30 March. BURKAN - Performing LIVE 28 March [21:00 - Gymzaal Zuid] @burkan500 is a Palestinian artist and organiser based in Köln, DE. With live DJ/VJ sets, he presents a library of sound and image; a heritage mixed with current media. The artist brings visuals produced and edited by various collaborators from Palestine and its diaspora. As drones carry the DJ set from industrial beats to revolutionary chants, from dreamscapes to Ataba, Mawal, and other folklore colors, it creates a sonic eruption with a core of its own. The visuals accompaying the set make four looped short videos; once, a collection of mesmerizing online material around and in palestine often censored by meta, another, its a raw phone footage of a Gazans life through the lens of disrupted communcation with his friend, other times its speaking through a poem with a fictional protagonist the very essence of the Palestinian spirit of tenacity. Visual credits goes to the artists: Dana Dawud, Mohanad El Masri, Diaa Lagan, Fuad Halawani, Eslam Muheisen, Najeim Elbahr. @najemelbahr @eslammuheisen @diaalagan @fu___lani @mohanad_elmasri dansdansrev and Mohammad Bakri Burkan’s live set is produced and performed as part of Libraries Are Not Supposed To Be Quiet program curated by @_sarjon_ . In waves and through the various spaces of De Sportschool, the sonic program travels as whisper poems, minimal and ambient live DJ sets, Invisible yet clearly heard artist seminars and audible archives that might have illegal echoes. The program draws from the first exhibition by P1 at De Sportschool ‘A Loud Voice Never Dies’ curated by Matt Plezier (@r.ndomzine ) & Claudia Schouten (@her_claus ) and transpires as an ever resonating research into themes of loudness, silence and urgent (in)visibilities.

The heat transfer from artist to artwork illuminates different parts of the dragon each time. The images are interspersed with quotes about the symbolic meaning of the dragon in different cultures, eras, and religions. With this work, Bekirović shows how the dragon, a creature found in cultures around the world, says something about how we shape our fears and desires.

This Sunday we’re open to public again with Katong Tulis! 👥 Doors open from 15:00 ___On October 13th, Niels Matitawaer and Martinus Papilaja will present their new publication, Katong Tulis (We Write). The book presentation will kick off with a live performance featuring the painting of its covers. Katong Tulis, a title that pays homage to their Moluccan heritage and graffiti background, is an impressive 250-page book filled with drawings created during their residency at de Sportschool last August.
