‘Dat verklaar en beloof ik’ PROSPECTS - 2026 @art_rotterdam The installation and performance presents a declaration banner holding the title “That I declare and promise” a sentence one must utter during the naturalisation process of becoming Dutch. Right under the banner stands the figure of Al Shaheen Baby Falcon @alshaheenbabyfalcon a symbolic character from Syria the artist invited to investigate the ethical implications and responsibilities of becoming Dutch, Positioning those who uttered the declaration and pledged to a country that invested in the Syrian war and thus caused them to flee. The falcon performed by naturalised Syrian refugees, salutes the audiences before they enter the research space, wherein piles of documented articles and reports on Dutch investments in the Syrian war scatter, some date back to 2012, the documents declare over 250million euros worth of investments while leaving the country without a functioning Dutch embassy nor clear evidences on the results of such investments. This intervention piece accompanies an email to the Dutch envoy to Syria and is presented to a large Dutch crowd on four days during Art Rotterdam. It asks the artist and Syrian immigrants “what it means to become Dutch from an ethical point” reflecting the critical gaze of identity politics on Dutch citizens and their awareness of the vital role they play in the large map of geopolitical wars.
