You never outgrow the fundamentals.
Revisiting Wushu fundamentals with a little more life experience and a different lens has been eye-opening and rewarding.
The movements haven’t changed, but my understanding of them has.
What once felt “basic” now feels deeper: stances, angles, structure, timing, balance, intention, and the details behind them. There’s a hidden beauty and value in the fundamentals that many competitive athletes eventually drift away from and later forget.
The longer you train, the more you realize the fundamentals were never simple.
Funny how the basics become deeper with time.

They grow up fast.
It was never really a question of whether I was capable of doing this with him, but more whether he’d be willing… and able to stay tight enough in a ball.
I was pleasantly surprised he was curious enough to try, and that he willingly listened to my instructions.
This is a moment I’ll hold onto forever. 🥲🥰

I used to train pretty consistently with barbells and relatively high volume. Back then, I didn’t really understand why someone wouldn’t want to train with a barbell.
And to be fair, it IS one of the best tools for building strength and muscle. It allows for measurable, structured overload in a way that’s hard to beat.
But it also comes with trade-offs.
You need the setup: barbell, plates, a rack, space or gym access. You need time to warm up, load and unload, and work up to your working sets. More importantly, you often have to adjust yourself to the barbell, rather than it adapting to you.
That’s something I’ve come to appreciate more over time.
Tools like kettlebells move with you. They offer more fluidity, more adaptability, and in many cases, a more accessible way for many to train consistently without all the friction.
Because not everyone is chasing maximal strength or significant hypertrophy. A lot of people just want to build some strength, improve endurance, maintain bone density, power and feel more prepared for day-to-day life.
These days, I still use the barbell occasionally… mostly just to feel sort of heavier loads.
But it’s no longer the center of how I train. Maybe I’ll come back to it one day. For now, it’s just one tool among many.

I have big goals in the gym… numbers I want to hit, skills I want to refine, weights I want to own.
But I also have big goals outside of it.
Time and energy aren’t unlimited.
So my training has to justify its place.
Kettlebell work gives me what I need without demanding everything I have: strength, work capacity, some muscle, overload, and loading for bone density and long-term resilience.
It’s not about doing everything. It’s about doing enough of the right things, consistently.
