A few weeks ago, during my visit to Cyprus with
@pedro_j_saavedra , we walked through the reopened streets of Varosha. Once a glamorous resort town on the eastern coast of the island, Varosha was abandoned in 1974 during the Turkish military intervention and sealed off behind barbed wire for nearly five decades.
Since 2020, parts of it have been reopened to the public under the control of Turkish Cypriot authorities. The move has drawn widespread international criticism as it goes against previous agreements to keep the area untouched until a comprehensive settlement is reached.
Tourists now wander through its eerie streets, passing rusted balconies, shops and the shells of hotels. It felt a bit surreal, like walking through a space suspended in time.
Here history, politics, and tourism collide in a very dissonant way.
