A vision of light spilling over the countryside—this artwork captures the harmony between sky and earth in a way that feels both cosmic and deeply grounded. The radiating sun above transforms into geometric brilliance, while rolling hills and quiet homes rest beneath its glow. A reminder of how vast the universe feels, even in the most familiar landscapes.

Böcklin painted this in 1880 as a memorial for patron Marie Berna’s late husband. She saw the unfinished canvas in his Florence studio & asked him to add the coffin & shrouded figure. He later told her she could 'dream into the world of dark shadows.' He made 3 more versions, inspiring artists like Rachmaninoff & DalĂ. #ArtHistory #ArnoldBöcklin #Surrealism
