"Respect the NO!" - @otto_types Otto always reminds us the importance of respecting students' bodily and intellectual autonomy, authentic communication, and neurological safety. That's why teachers need to understand - sometimes refusal is the only way a student can feel neurologically safe! 💡

This was a tough one. But all I can do is keep spreading the word - communication is the goal. There is not one right way to communicate. It’s a day full of 15 minute, high impact, TEDx-style talks… So we can start learning from LIVED experience. We attended the National Federation of the Blind’s tenBroek Disability Law Symposium. Our Director of Policy & Legal Advocacy Sam Crane presented on supported decision-making alongside AAC user and SDM advocate Otto Lana, DREDF’s Ayesha Elaine Lewis, and the ACLU’s Britt Belwine. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Autism Tree Spokesperson and Disability Advocate Otto Lana. Otto, a University of San Diego sophomore and Co-Founder of the USD Alliance of Disability Advocates (ADA) Club, led the effort in bringing the Stories That Move Us: A Weekend of Film & Impact screening to campus this past weekend 🎬 Our team loved connecting with so many attendees on Sunday and creating a calm sensory room space where people could take a break and recharge 💙 It was such a meaningful day filled with powerful storytelling and important conversations around disability advocacy and safety. We truly felt the impact of community coming together in such a thoughtful way 💬 A big thank you to our incredible volunteers Gabrielle, Javier, Leidy, and Natalia for your kindness, energy, and care. You helped make both the sensory room and info booth a supportive space for everyone who stopped by 😊

The time has come to formally announce a dream coming true- after 4 years of work — and we need you. 🎬 Stories That Move Us: A Weekend of Film & Impact Because stories don’t just move us — they change us. On April 18–19 at the University of San Diego, we are bringing together film, conversation, and community to elevate voices too often unheard. This two-day experience features screenings of US and NATTY, directed by @bydave_fortune , alongside live Q&As and meaningful dialogue around disability, safety, and inclusion. Sunday’s program is especially powerful. In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we will shine a light on the urgent and often overlooked realities facing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. We are honored to have advocate Shahriar Afshar as MC and Emmy Award-winning journalist and sibling advocate Elizabeth Espinosa as moderator. Panelists include @otto_types @_lexibernard @dianapastoracarson and Yolanda Cruz of @calscdd ✨ Why this matters: People with disabilities experience significantly higher rates of abuse, yet their stories are too often excluded from the broader conversation. This weekend is about changing that — through storytelling, education, and community connection. We are incredibly proud to bring this to @soccer2jp ’s alma mater in partnership with @ada_usd - USD’s Alliance for Disability Advocates and alongside The Natalie Project (#UsToo). 🎟 Limited seating — we expect to sell out. If you’re in SoCal/San Diego, we would love to see you there. Thank you to our sponsor, the Associated Student Government at the University of San Diego, for helping make this possible. Segregation doesn’t just harm Autistic students — it harms society. Let's normalize disability and recognize it as a natural facet of the human condition. Classrooms should mirror society as a whole - just like a diamond, the more facets, the greater the brilliance and shine. 💎

Education should not be endured, it should be celebrated 📣 It’s time to create schools where every student is valued and well-supported. With the right support and raised expectations, students rise to the challenge and flourish when included. 💡
