Publishing as Scaffolding #7 Ugly Duckling Presse with Rebekah Smith and Asiya Wadud  Rikhardinkatu Library on 16 April, Thursday, starting at 4 pm. Organized by Rab-Rab Press. Ugly Duckling Presse is a collectively-run, nonprofit publisher of poetry, translation, experimental prose, performance texts, and books by artists. Through the efforts of a volunteer editorial collective and small part-time staff, UDP has published more than 400 titles to date and produced countless prints and ephemera. Join us for a presentation from Rebekah Smith, UDP editor, who will talk about scale and community: how a literary arts organization can also be a publisher, and how making books together becomes a way of making a life together. As artists, editors, writers, and translators, UDP works non-hierarchically—no bosses, no growth model, no fantasy of scaling up—while attending to the process of creating books that are as pleasurable to hold as they are to read to read, and to practices of generative collaboration. As much as a publisher, UDP and its community are a group of co-conspirators in a daydreaming, bookmaking experiment—making the world we want to live in every minute of every day. Rebekah will be joined by Helsinki-based UDP author Asiya Wadud. Asiya is a writer, most recently of the collections Mandible Wishbone Solvent and No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body. Wadud’s work has been supported by Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Foundation Jan Michalski, Tekstintalo Helsinki, and Danspace Project. Publishing as Scaffolding talks are supported by the Kone Foundation. #publishingasscaffolding #rabrabpress #uglyducklingpresse #publishing poetry

The conversation with artist Minna Henriksson focuses on how art workers participate in different protest campaigns in Helsinki. We will discuss movements, demonstrations and protest cycles that have taken place over the past decade. We will examine how different protest movements are often intertwined, and how one grassroots initiative can become a springboard for others. We will talk about how artists participate in broader social movements, and how art workers mobilise in order to defend their own interests, for example by organising protests against funding cuts in the cultural sector. Minna Henriksson is a visual artist based in Helsinki. Henriksson’s artistic practice is often based on extensive archive research. One of the fields of focus in her work has been the dynamics and power-positions within the art scene.

Publishing as Scaffolding Talks # 6 : Sarasija Subramanian presenting Reliable Copy Wednesday, January 28th | 18:00 - 20:00 Museum of Impossible Forma Welcome to a talk by @sarasija.subramanian on @reliablecopy organized by Rab-Rab Press at @museumofimpossibleforms . Sarasija will introduce Reliable Copy’s publishing practice over the years, focussing on their (Fine) Arts Dissertations Series, facsimiles of graduate-level college dissertations by artists from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (Gujarat, India), the first art college established in India post-Independence. Functioning as an early mode of artists’ writing which encouraged articulation, research, reflection, rigour, and documentation as key modes of learning within the largely studio-based programme, the dissertation was—and continues to be—a component which encouraged students to reflect on their studio practice and processes. She will also discuss their book ‘Modernism/Murderism: The Modern Art Debate in Kumar’ which compiles (and presents for the first time in English) a debate around modern art’s emergence into the Indian subcontinent from 1959 to 1964 between Jyoti Bhatt, then a young artist in Baroda, Pherozeshah Mehta, an art connoisseur and writer from Karachi, and readers and respondents of the Gujarati periodical ‘Kumar’. Sarasija Subramanian is an artist based in Bangalore, India, where she is also the editor of Reliable Copy, a publishing house and curatorial practice for works, projects, and writing by artists. Reliable Copy was founded in 2018, and publishes books and documents, curates exhibitions and screenings, undertakes research projects, and hosts a wide variety of public programming. It is represented by the artists Nihaal Faizal and Sarasija Subramanian. This is the sixth Publishing as Scaffolding talk organised by Rab-Rab Press. The talks are supported by the Kone Foundation @koneensaatio

#dimitrakationi #loomadtaimed #karoliinakagovere #liisirünkla #opapublishing opa luule poetry
