The festival will be held October 16-23. Congratulations to our incredible cast and crew, and thank you to our wonderful family and friends who have supported us on our journey. This is just the beginning! The Old Man and The Barber will be screening on Tuesday, October 21st at 1:15pm at The LOT, at Fashion Island. I was 12 when my family and I moved to the U.S. from Iran. Back in iran, movies weren’t theaters and posters—they were a man with a briefcase full of bootlegged VHS tapes, knocking on doors. Illegal, but magical.
On my 14th birthday, after relentless begging, my parents gave in—I got my first camcorder. The promise was to take more family videos. That spring day beneath the cherry blossoms gifted from Japan to the U.S. in 1912, my family, like so many other immigrants in Washington DC, made the pilgrimage. Camcorder in hand, I shot footage - some of family, but mostly on the beauty of the frame- edited it, added music. That was the inception—the seed of an idea that films weren’t just something to watch; they were something to create.
Since then, I have spent 20 years in this industry, involved in over 100 films- from being the music-studio-cigarette-butt-remover to scoring films with Oscar winners, and collaborating with filmmakers who have reshaped the language of cinema. Music has been my way in, my way of telling stories. But some stories live too loudly in my head to stay unheard.
Today on another spring day, that inception of the idea came to life. I stood on the other side of the camera—not leaving behind what I’ve built, but expanding for the necessity of storytelling. I LOVE films. Every single part of it. Whether working with incredible collaborators to bring their visions to life or digging deep to unearth the stories that won’t let me rest, I LIVE to tell them.
So here’s to all of you with stories. I can’t wait for you to WATCH this creation, not just listen to it.
