In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, API Forward was proud to stand alongside community leaders and elected officials at a powerful gathering honoring AANHPI heritage, culture, and community. This year’s theme —“Power in Unity”— was on full display. API Forward President Christian Aniciete and Co-Founder Tracey Lam joined a strong and inspiring presence of AANHPI leaders from across the region. API Forward extends our gratitude to the many elected officials who continue to champion and support AANHPI communities, including @govtinakotek , @councilornadiahasan , @monkeywat14 and former gala keynote speaker @councilorkoyamalane . Representation matters! Special thanks to @oregonrisesabovehate and @lansuchinesegarden for creating space for connection — opening the garden to the community and bringing together local nonprofits to share stories, build relationships, and uplift our collective mission. This is what unity in community looks like 👆 #PowerInUnity #AANHPI #AANHPIHeritageMonth #Community #StrongerTogether

Yesterday, in a powerful stand for freedom from tyranny, Japanese American survivors of World War II American concentration camps, their descendants, and allies gathered at the Japanese American Historical Plaza for the “Never Again Is Now” rally organized by Tsuru for Solidarity, Portland JACL, and Oregon Rises Above Hate as part of the nationwide No Kings Day. Among those present were Joni Kimoto and Janice Okamoto. They were children when the government forced their families to leave their home in Portland’s Nihonmachi (Japantown) and imprisoned them in livestock sheds at the Portland Assembly Center (now the Portland Expo Center). Surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers, 3,676 Japanese and Japanese Americans from northern Oregon and central Washington were unjustly imprisoned there before their own government, under the directive of Executive Order 9066 (issued in 1942), shipped them to Camp Minidoka in the Idaho sagebrush. Over the course of four years, more than 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of them U.S. citizens, were torn from their homes and locked in American concentration camps. White America did not march. There was no outrage. The nation looked away. Eighty-three years later, history is repeating itself. The Trump administration is running the same playbook: violent immigration raids, mass detentions, and families being disappeared. Today, the Japanese American community is standing up in solidarity with the immigrants and refugees under attack. Let’s join their call to action: Never Again Is Now. . . . #NeverAgainIsNow #NoKingDay #TsuruForSolidarity #AbolishICE #memoryactivism #insolidarity #Together #pdx #americanhistory
