Primitive Retreat Yakushima, Japan Excellent Prize — NOT A HOTEL Design Competition 2026 Out of 1,058 entries from 112 countries and regions, Primitive Retreat was awarded the Excellent Prize. The proposal explores a restrained response to Yakushima’s landscape, where weather, terrain, and time shape how the space is used. An approach that does not depend on specific moments, but allows nature to be experienced continuously. A timeless architecture that gradually settles into its surroundings over time. It has been a rewarding journey. Thank you to NOT A HOTEL and the jury for the opportunity. @notahotel_official @sou_fujimoto @masamichi_katayama @bjarkeingels @shinji_hamauzu Visuals and drawings @ordermatter

Primitive Retreat Yakushima, Japan Top 10 Finalist — NOT A HOTEL Out of 1,058 entries from 112 countries and regions, our proposal, Primitive Retreat, has advanced to the final stage of NOT A HOTEL Design Competition 2026. @notahotel_official Primitive Retreat explores a restrained architectural response to Yakushima’s ancient landscape, focusing on structure, material, and spatial clarity rather than spectacle. The proposal seeks a quiet coexistence between shelter and forest. Visuals @ordermatter

as found @asfound_objects is the extension of Order Matter. If Order Matter works through space, shaping environments and composing them with furniture, objects, and lighting as part of a larger whole, as found focuses on objects that can exist independently. While objects within a project respond to a specific context, as found objects are conceived on their own terms, defined not by a single site but by a continuous subject and attitude. The name as found refers to encountering things as they are. Not an aesthetic of roughness, but a position of restraint, allowing forms to remain present without prescribing meaning. In searching for a shared ground, we return to nature, not as imitation but as a universal experience. Nature is something everyone has encountered, yet each person remembers differently. It offers a common reference without fixing interpretation. Placed in daily life, these objects enter into a quiet dialogue with their surroundings, allowing associations to accumulate over time. What begins as a shared reference may gradually become personal, forming part of someone’s own leitmotif, a recurring theme shaped through lived experience. Process defines the work, moving from observation to drawing and resolved through making. Technology sharpens precision, while craftsmanship responds to material behaviour. as found continues as an evolving body of work, extending these principles into objects that develop beyond a single project. 1-4 📷 @kiwoong_hong 5-8 📷 @simonebossiphotographer

A short excerpt from the construction process of Raw House. The project was carefully carved through close collaboration with local craftsmen, with careful attention to how structure, material, and detail, meticulously considered during the design phase, could be precisely realised on site. This video was made to acknowledge the many hands and efforts behind a single project. While completed photographs often show only the final result, we wanted to document the process and the people whose work made it possible. The full video available on YouTube with credits for everyone involved at the end. Search: “Order Matter Raw House” Construction: Ilto Construction @iltocon Video: FON STUDIO @fon__studio

Raw House has been nominated for the ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards 2026. Nine months after completion, life has quietly settled in. Above, architects, artists, and a collector shape their everyday lives, drawn by a calm where nature gently enters the city. Light, air, and raw materiality define the rhythm of each space, allowing moments of stillness to emerge within an urban context. On the ground floor, the building is now used as Order Matter’s studio. Work, making, and conversations unfold at a slower pace, much like the architecture itself. Vote for Raw House at the link in the bio 🔗 ☺️ If you’re around and feel like stopping by, send us a DM. The door’s open :) 📷 @simonebossiphotographer
