An entry, redefined.
The transformation of the berms and courtyard reflects years of study and planning, culminating in a collaborative vision with landscape architects @reedhilderbrand . A tranquil, biodiverse landscape now welcomes patrons and shapes the experience upon arrival. The planting patterns echo the contours of the backdrop offered by the Vaca Mountains.
A long-term transformation begins.
Their influence, in every detail.
Margrit Mondavi and Baroness Philippine de Rothschild shaped the spaces of Opus One by far beyond the wine itself, applying their shared appreciation of art, craftsmanship, and design throughout the Estate.
The newly transformed courtyard reflects their shared aesthetic. Precision-cut stone forms mosaics along meandering limestone pathways, while benches and natural stone installations create places for gathering – all set within newly planted surroundings. Each element is composed with the same attention to detail that has long defined Opus One.
Today, we recognize the women who set that standard, and the influence they carry forward.
Suckering is underway at the Estate. This essential canopy management practice allows the team to reaffirm the shoots selected during winter pruning. Shoots emerging from older wood on the trunk are carefully removed, while new growth is given space to grow and flourish at this early stage of the season. Through suckering, the vine’s energy is directed exclusively toward the shoots chosen for the new vintage ahead.
The original intent.
When Scott Johnson of Johnson Fain (@johnsonfain ) first presented the Opus One design to Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it was a deliberately adventurous proposal. Designed to sit low within the landscape, the architecture was intended to remain in dialogue with the surrounding vineyards and valley beyond. The courtyard and berms were central to this vision - a foreground that anchors the building to its place. More than three decades later, these elements have become more resonant than ever.

From its inception, the 13-acre X1 West was conceived as more than a vineyard redevelopment. It was imagined as a long-term investment in resilience - an opportunity to thoughtfully re-examine how a vineyard might be designed to withstand an increasingly unpredictable future while continuing to produce fruit of exceptional quality. Every decision, from spacing and orientation to soil preparation and trellising, was guided by a single goal: create a vineyard where the vines thrive in harmony with the land and an incredibly biodiverse ecosystem which supports them both.
Today, X1 West is in the final stages of vine training, with a first harvest projected for 2027. #OpusOneMoments
Stewardship of the Opus One Estate continues to evolve - native plants replacing lawns, culinary gardens emerging, regenerative practices enriching the soil beneath our vines.
Every decision is guided by care, in service of a long-term vision.
“Foreshadow” by American artist John Shea is built by hand from small, joined forms of clay. Living between categories, the work resists easy definition - neither purely pottery, nor painting, nor sculpture, yet embodying all three at once. Pinched and layered from mounds of clay, its surfaces move between smooth refinement and raw expression. A muted palette, drawn from a 1932 Japanese color dictionary, settles into the space with a quiet, contemplative presence.

On this day, we reflect on Baron Philippe de Rothschild, our Co-Founder, who lived life to the fullest and pushed boundaries his whole life. His vision endures in every vintage. #OpusOneMoments

Inspired by our Co-Founders’ shared passion for wine and exceptional cuisine, “Art of the Table” brings their vision to life. A thoughtful, coursed pairing of select Opus One vintages and seasonal dishes, unhurried, immersive, and reflective of the Estate itself.
Opus One is a Napa Valley red wine blend crafted from five noble varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec - a style long associated with the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Reflecting this composition, the vineyards across our Oakville Estate are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (6%), Merlot (6%), Petit Verdot (6%), and Malbec (2%). Together, these plantings form a deliberate balance that is reflected in every bottle of Opus One.
