~Album backstory time~

So back in 2018, I had the pleasure of living with beautiful weirdo @jatrimar . James @erikalundahlmusic and I even started a synth band (my first!) called @pink_shadows_music . To say that I've learned a lot about synths from James is an understatement. I mean, he's basically the reason I love industrial music now, and I had never even listened to skinny puppy before meeting him 😱

Anyway, in may 2020 when we were pandemic lonely and feeling creatively stunted, James and I started a bi-weekly song exchange as a way to have some creative accountability. We kept it up for about 9 months! I'm really proud of how much I grew during that time as an electronic musician. And, of course, every song on this album was at least started during that time period.
.
So, this album is, inherently, a covid snapshot. Every song brings back dear memories of James and our hours-long bi-weekly phone calls -- these, and creating new songs for our exchange, were deeply grounding for me during that fucked up year.

@jatrimar inspired me to buy one early in the pandemic (from @patchwerks -- they're awesome!), and I'm so glad I did. Me and Prophet, we have a connection.

Also -- rest in sonic peace Dave Smith. Sending appreciation for your work that has impacted my musical journey so profoundly.

EDIT: I just realized that instead of adding the last 4 actual photos I selected, instagram just added the same photo 4 times...lol. Oh well!

In that light, I wanted to share about one the tracks on my upcoming album (releasing on July 8th!)

For my track Eat the Rich (written on election day 2020 😂😭 swipe <-- for a preview!) the awesome drum samples came from a track my friend @maluhia.music asked me to mix called "Already Gone." Thanks for letting me use this awesome sample! Be sure to check out Maluhia's music -- it's friggin beautiful.

It's great being a mixing engineer -- you get to work with incredible artists, and it opens the door for even more creative #electronicmusic collaboration.

With my album "In Exchange" coming out in just 2.5 weeks (July 8th! - pre-save link in my bio) I thought I would give you a tour of a few of the music machines that made this possible.
First up-- the Octatrack. I bought this sweet bb right before the pandemic and I'm so glad I did. 3 of the tracks on the album were written on and recorded from this lovely sampler/arranger/performance mixer.

I find it very difficult to write electronic music on a DAW (like Ableton Live, etc.) -- I've tried! With the Octatrack, there are so many limitations to what you can do, and for me the limitations are so key to getting anything done, and honestly, to having fun while doing it!

Nowadays, the OT has become the centerpiece of my newest electronic project @ghostfetishband

About 5 years ago (!!) I started a practice of working on something related to music every morning. Whether that's making a loop, mixing a song, practicing piano, or building a sample pack, music is my companion every morning.

Some days I just sit there looking at my gear begrudgingly, but most days it's the reason I get out of bed. I read somewhere once that "you are your habits" and I think there's a shred of truth to that ☀️

Time is a collection of songs I originally wrote at the end of 2019 (😅) as a follow up to my first EP. But by the time I released that first EP, the world had changed so much, and the sound of the new music I was creating had radically changed as well. So, I shelved these tracks and moved on.
Then late last year I played them for myself and fell back in love with them 💜
I'm very pleased to share Time with you today -- Enjoy :)
