Opening the Edge, proposed by Jane Greengold in partnership with NYCHA, is a resident-led participatory design effort to remove the fence and create a new open space in an underutilized grassy area of Lillian Wald Houses on the Lower East Side. The backs of the benches have started going up today! 💡💡💡The community is so excited for this park to open up this fall! Thank you to everyone who made this possible!!Opening The Edge is bringing a new community space to the Lillian Wald Houses in the Lower East Side. Residents, neighbors, and local leaders gathered to celebrate the upcoming construction and this huge milestone that took nearly a decade to accomplish. Proposed by artist Jane Greengold and developed in partnership with NYCHA, Opening the Edge is a resident-led, participatory design project intended to remove the fence around an inaccessible grassy area of the Wald Houses and create a new, welcoming open space for the community. Since 2014, a coalition of residents, neighbors and the Design Trust for Public Space have been reimagining new uses for this underutilized space. Through multiple participatory design workshops, residents have proposed a more accessible design will have benches, a sloped platform for performances, tables, paths and new lighting (and no fence!), working closely with @daviestoews Architecture, The PARC Foundation, and @nychagram ’s Asset & Capital Management Division. 🔗 Link in our bio to learn more about the project and how it inspired a citywide movement to connect public housing residents with the power of public space! Construction is anticipated to begin in the coming months. ❤️ Opening the Edge was awarded capital funding by Council Member carlinalrivera and then-Borough President @galeabrewer .
