Research Residency Program 2027 is an open-call artist-in-residence program by Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS), inviting international creators across a wide range of fields to live, conduct research, and work in Tokyo.
The program offers 6 to 12 weeks of residency in one of three periods: May to July 2027, September to November 2027, or January to March 2028. TOKAS selects 5 creators in total across all periods. Residents stay at TOKAS Residency in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, and have access to shared studios (125㎡ and 48㎡), a networking room, library, and laundry.
Eligible fields include:
• Visual arts: drawing, installation, painting, performance, photography, media art, sculpture, sound art, video
• Design, architecture, music, performing arts
• Curation, art criticism, cultural research and writing
Eligibility:
• Considerable professional experience in your field
• Able to communicate in English
• Independent or working as a duo (must have at least one joint project)
• Students are not eligible (except PhD candidates)

• Two letters of recommendation from arts or cultural professionals
• Portfolio (6 pages max, A4 landscape, up to 3 projects, 10MB max)
