I’ve been unwell of late. A series of infections, conditions & exhaustions. Apologies for the work delays. I’m getting through it now. And as the bluebells pop, I’m pretty grateful for everything!

I had a lovely day last Friday, running a participatory photo workshop for @waveprojectuk and a team of 10 young folk + 5 volunteers. The sun shone, the kids were Brilliant at photographing surfers and we all appreciated the time to connect and get creative! The Wave Project is a UK surf therapy charity, with a Scotland base at @lostshore Surf Resort Edinburgh. The site is pretty incredible, with amazing facilities and jaw dropping waves against the backdrop of a disused quarry. The Wave Project charity help to build confidence and resilience in young people, by offering an expert programme of activities including surfing, skateboarding, climbing and more. This particular group of young people I worked with have all previously completed a 6 week surfing course and they are patiently waiting for the weather to warm up, so they can get back in the waves again! In the meantime, I was asked to devise a winter participatory photo session which could share knowledge and skills and provide fun activities for the group. We couldnt have wished for sunnier weather last week! We got inspired by amazing surf photography images, then we got out the waterproof cameras, explored the area and got creative. The young people were provided with digital copies of their images and went home with their favourite image printed out and placed in a card. Everyone left smiling - including me! Many thanks to Ruairidh & the Wave Project for having me - it was a pleasure. Pics below copyrighted & courtesy of @emile.young

t’s been a while since I last posted, but this one deserves a shout out! My thanks to @rainbowturtleuk shop in Paisley, for hosting a window display of photos by participants from our Open Aye photo walks in Renfrewshire. The photos in the windows were made by our community artists & over 50 local residents, some new to the area, some longer term, many with different backgrounds & perspectives. All share a love of nature. Being in nature makes us feel good. Taking photos & getting creative outdoors can also positively impact our physical & mental health. Connecting with others, ourselves & the environment can have profound impacts on our wellbeing. And for some, especially New Scots, photo walks also provide opportunities for knowledge exchange, orientation, conversation and solidarity. As a community artist & participation facilitator, it is my pleasure, joy & privilege to work & walk alongside with so many great folk. My thanks to all those who have joined us on our creative adventures over the years! Your photos tell stories & hold memories of awe, peace & respect. Thanks too, to the funders & partners who help to support these projects; @renmhwb , @scottishforestry , @renfrewshire_council , and so many local community groups & anchor organisations who have joined us on the way. We need images & symbols of unity & peace more than ever. I am so glad these photos can be displayed in this way, especially at this time. Let’s enjoy nature, connections & creativity together, as much as we can.

Open Aye Image Archive: Glasgow Trades Collective: Women's Plastering Course 2025 This weeks pic of the week is detailing the wonderful social enterprise that is the @glasgow_trades_collective Established in 2024, the GTC was set up by tradespeople who have a vision of a more inclusive culture in the construction industry. They are providing courses and experiences for more women, non-binary folk and people of colour. You can view their website here: /about and have a look at the range of courses available. On a mild November Saturday around 10 people were gathered into the space in Govanhill, learning how to plaster, when I showed up with my camera (many thanks to @firstportscotland for the commission!). Ive taken photos for lots of housing associations over the years and I actually love taking pics on a building site (!!) .. however this was different to most building sites I've seen. Not just because everyone working was a women or non-binary. There was a palpable sense of fun. Oodles of respect, laughter & learning happening. The GTC team were on hand and guiding the efforts perfectly. Everyone there seemed to support and motivate each other. The overall atmosphere was of determination and solidarity. Yes to more women in the construction industry! But also yes to more inclusive spaces, where people can come together, share, learn and support one another, to build whatever it is they want to.

Open Aye Photo Project Update: Photo sharing as informal ESOL, Paisley, today. I’ve tried each week to look at archive pics & projects (to celebrate 15 years of Open aye this year!) but today’s post is a little different. Today’s post is from a session I have just finished. I found it really emotional. I thought I’d share. I can’t tell u who the project is with or where it was based or who the partner is.. because it’s unsafe to publicise this now. Suffice to say it was with New Scots. With a group who have been hounded out of their usual esol class by bigots & fascists. I am grateful to have a small amount left in the Open Aye pot so I can help to provide them now with a safe space, to get creative and learn informal esol through our photo workshops. Last week we took pics of natural objects (pine cones, shells & stones) on colourful backdrops. Taking pics of natural objects is great for wellbeing. We swapped the names for colours in different languages. This week the theme was food. We took pics of colourful fruit, swapped names for them (seems kiwi is a universal name?!) and were inspired by photos of food from around the world. The first pic was taken during our photo discussion. Participants retold stories of their homes, food they made & ate, feelings of being there and sharing with loved ones. I found it emotional to hear their stories today. I’ve been doing this facilitation job for 15 years & volunteering with refugee groups for 23 years. But I’ve never seen Scotlands response this cruel & so lacking in compassion. To think these kind, capable men can’t go to their usual esol class, because of hatred & lies spread about them.. it just so sad. I’ve also heard this week of so many great refugee supporting orgs who will be loosing funding next year. Glasgow has developed an incredible infrastructure of refugee support over the years. To see it sidelined & shattered due to political posturing & lack of funding is terrible. So. It’s time to step up. What can we do to help? Share, care, smile, support, show solidarity, show up, protest the far right, write to the MPs & MSPs, speak to the media. Change the narrative. Choose love.

Open Aye Participatory Photo Project Archive: Day Care staff Wellbeing Session & Training Day, 2025 This week's participatory project focus is from a session I did this week: A wellbeing participatory photo session for Day Care staff, in Renfrew, commissioned by Renfrewshire Health & Social Care Partnership (RHSCP). RHSCP asked me to create a 2 hour photo session which would engage staff during their team development day, and which would give them tips on activities they could take back to their day care centres, to use with their own service users. Around 20 staff members participated in a feel-good photo session initially, learning how best to use their camera phones, taking photos of light, flowers, patterns and details in the space around us. The session was interactive and fun and designed to help them to relax and appreciate life's wee simple pleasures. The results were great - some amazing flower pics taken! And the whole staff team really engaged. For the rest of the session the group were given ideas and discussed how to how to set up this kind of activity in their own day care centres. They planned how it could be utilised within groups with a diverse range of needs and abilities. Overall a lovely session. it was a delight to see their smiles and chuffed faces when they created such beautiful flower images! I feel like so many NHS & Care staff need wellbeing sessions, themselves. I was really glad to be able to offer this to them. &I hope they feel confident to take it forward and bring the joy to others! Please see some of their comments and feedback below: "Very interesting, really informative, great sensory experience. A new activity to offer our service users." "Makes you think of different activities." "Informative, gave happy vibes. Got people talking and working together." "Good ideas. To offer service users a new experience and an activity that is inclusive for all." "A skill I didn't know I could achieve." "Service users would love this"

Open Aye Project Archive: Open Aye for Woodlands Trust, 2016 Open Aye was commissioned by Lyrix Organix & @woodlandtrust to deliver a photo workshop in Glasgow as part of campaign for Charter for Trees, 2017. The Charter for Trees, Woods and People set out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand stronger together. The Tree Charter was launched in Lincoln Castle on 6 November 2017; the 800th anniversary of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. The Tree Charter is rooted in more than 60,000 ‘tree stories’ gathered from people of all backgrounds across the UK. Open Aye assisted a group of 10 young people (ages 16-18) to be part of the wider collective of tree stories gathered, as part of the campaigns launch. The team took part in a ½ day photo workshop in Nov 2016. Images taken by participants were uploaded, selected, edited and captioned then the finished outputs were submitted as participants photo tree stories, for use in the wider Tree Charter campaign.
