Dorothea Tanning (1910 - 2012)
Known for her surrealist paintings and sculptures, Dorothea Tanning also worked as an illustrator for advertisements. Shown here is an advertisement for Macy’s in the New York Times in 1941. She was also commissioned to design costumes for ballet, in this instance ‘The Witch’ at the Royal Opera House in 1950. The final image also reminds me of the ‘I Am Kurious Oranj’ set design featuring the Michael Clark company. ‘The Shining’ correlation in the main image ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ 1943 is very strong, but in this case the open door is Room 201. Interesting how these aesthetics of dream spaces have infiltrated commercial work and influenced popular culture. She continued making new work into her 90s. She lived until she was 101.

Rose Garden 🌺
Been working on some new music recently, on a scoring tip. I’ve always been really interested in film and tv scores and soundtracks. I think the Nala Sinephro score to ‘The Smashing Machine’ is brilliant, I recently heard Ioanna Gika’s vocals for a Bobby Krlic track for ‘Beau Is Afraid’, and would love to hear a full score from her. I also watched ‘The Outrun’ recently and as well as the score, the EBM soundtrack and the closing titles is inspired. I would love to hear any recommendations. One of the projects I’m writing for is instrumentals with vocals. This is taken from one of the new tracks inspired by Maryanne Amacher & Laurie Spiegel. Love gardens in the rain. 🌧️
This is the rose garden in Battersea, I’m fascinated by rose gardens as they have the power to transport you back centuries. It’s been really interesting to consider the stories and layered histories of certain areas of London on walks led by Travis Elborough recently, supporting my interest in the history of the city. No doubt influenced by the tv I watched as a child I think the gothic realism is still haunting. Interesting to think that despite visions we have of the future, they’ll remain the same, in time.
