Took a most enjoyable Sunday afternoon trip up the smoke for the latest instalment of Concrete Atlantis at The Horse Hospital, which not even the unforeseen closure of the Piccadilly Line could detract too much from. Amicably and eruditely hosted by @traviselborough , we had an excellent 80s documentary on the nascent Essex electropop scene, a live edition of the Monstrosities Mon Amour podcast with @johngrindrod and @gmdarley (special guest: Bradwell A Power Station), Ballardian words and drones with @stonecirclesampler and @mira.aroyo and a heavyweight collab of dank n icy electronics from @opalxdome and @microcorps . Already looking forward to the next gathering…

May Day BH weekend, so off to the Other City for Sounds From The Other City a.k.a. Salford Christmas. Bobbing along Chapel St with a bunch of good souls, a right old time was had. Bathing Suits, ashnymph, Mr Scruff B2B Samurai, Christian toilet facilities (an actual thing, not a band), barbecued chorizo rolls in Bexley Sq with Scruff thumping out the batida, gig mafia guy, and a beautifully sublime closing set from Belgian neckerchief botherer Milan W were the highlights. Sad to miss Zolatec, but the colours in my eyes were better than the colours on my phone, and I got queuing paranoia. Hey ho. Finished up with several hours drinking in The Old Pint Pot. Magic.

James Fest 2026…. Out with James Papademetrie on Thursday for the Mark Fisher film upstairs at Pink Moon. I still don’t get MF entirely but the fact there’s still lots to think about is good exercise for my increasingly addled brain. It’s heavy on protest footage, and I’m glad I’d seen ‘Whistle And I’ll Come To You’ recently as their take on that features prominently, but 90 minutes very well spent, followed by some badly timed speed drinking and missed buses. Then out with James McLarnon last night for My Bloody Valentine at the RAH. It’s been a while since I’ve seen ‘em (er, 1990s) but after taking a couple of songs to settle down, MBV were excellent and the set was close to perfect (coulda been a tiny bit louder?), helped by a genuinely decent mix - Kev & Bilinda’s vocals twinkling through the sonic murk, Deb & Colm forcefully underpinning everything. We were standing and when they played ‘Soon’ it felt like being back in the rave. Wonderful stuff. The show was part of the Teenage Cancer Trust event curated by Robert Smith. Hope they made a shed load of £££. To repeat what I said above, I’m glad there’s cool folk out there putting events like these on…
