It took a long time to tweak it and figure out how we wanted it to sound, but pulling more friends into the mix (and taking a break to get a little drunk at back bar…) finally got us where we needed to be. This is a love story.
This is: a cutting board made for me by my father, a piece of his mother’s kitchen table, made for her by her beloved husband, my grandfather Seamus. Their love, their history lives in the grain; my father’s love in the cuts. His love, for me and for them.
Three of these beautiful knives were made for me by my sweet man, @keatongoddard — one before we were dating and two since. Yesterday he came into the kitchen and told me to close my eyes. I opened them and saw this Chinese cleaver resting on this cutting board (he had taken the time to get it out of the cupboard).
The cleaver had been my grandmother’s and came to me last year when she died, but had a crack in the handle and needed some love. He had fixed it for me, for a surprise, and laid it down on her table. Home away from home; life laughing in the face of the thing we call death.
