In many of our “Did You Know?” posts, we talk about the ongoing cost of living with a spinal cord injury — and today, for Giving Tuesday, we want to highlight one of David’s biggest expenses: his daily aid.
This is the person who gets David up in the morning, manages bowel and bladder care, helps with bathing, dressing, and all the essentials most people take for granted. And here’s the part that shocks most people…
Insurance doesn’t cover this.
For a nurse aide to be paid by insurance, it must be considered a “medical necessity.”
But last time we checked, using the bathroom, bathing, and getting dressed are medical necessities — right?
Because of this gap, David pays roughly $12,000 a year out of pocket just to have the basic daily support he needs to live safely and with dignity.
So if you’ve ever wondered why David still has to fundraise all these years later — this is one major reason why.

Most of you already know this story but 15 years ago @joycetsang and I decided to ditch our careers in engineering and finance in order to pursue storytelling. Not filmmaking or photography; those were just mediums and outlets to express our creative work. But storytelling in the sense of being invited to walk into people’s homes, have them open up about their deepest desires, dreams, and struggles; and walk way with the trust that we’d tell their story in the most authentic and powerful way possible.
David Jeffers is one of those individuals. Despite a tragic life-altering accident, despite the pain and struggles of raising a family as a quadriplegic, and while in the midst of rediscovering his own life’s work and creative passion, David and his family generously opened up their home to us.
And while David’s story is ongoing, today we walk away with a 20 minute documentary giving the world a glimpse of his life.
This is a 3-year passion project originating from our friends at @thisisbien ; an LA-based inclusive motion design studio. We’re excited to showcase how this collaboration has allowed us to push @onlytodaytv ’s storytelling into new territory!

We start our storytelling process for every project with research and deep listening — and that’s exactly what we did with Dr. Sandra Faber during the initial pre-production stages of Nova, a short film we wrote, produced, shot, and edited with @sparktheseries

Dr. Faber is a an American astrophysicist known for her research in the evolution of galaxies and her work to fix the @nasahubble telescope.

She worked at the @lickobservatory , where we shot a scene of the film, at a time when very few women pursued science careers. We are so grateful for Dr. Faber’s guidance and willingness to support this film to inspire girls everywhere to reach for the stars.
