More National Guard troops could hit the streets of Washington and D.C.’s top prosecutor says she’ll go after parents of curfew violators as part of the “summer surge” in the District that federal authorities announced Friday. For the most part, crime has been going down in D.C., but the main drivers for the increased policing are the large, sometimes violent gatherings of juveniles and also the slate of America250 events planned for the summer. “This summer, starting now, the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force is going even deeper, even further to surge even more federal law enforcement resources to this district to drive down crime in D.C.,” Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald said. “And we’re also here to talk about turning up the heat on the criminals in D.C. all summer long,” U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta said. Officials, however, haven’t offered many details about what the surge will look like. Serralta, the head of the Safe and Beautiful Task Force, also announced more police on the streets, including doubling the number of Homeland Security agents on the task force. The Homeland Security agents won’t be enforcing immigration or patrolling with D.C. officers, but targeting fraud around public housing vouchers. “You will see more U.S. Park Police on foot, in vehicles and on horseback through D.C. to support the summer surge,” Serralta said. WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The water is flowing again at the cascading fountain at Meridian Hill Park after it was closed for more than half a decade. Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park, is a National Historic Landmark in the Northwest, D.C. It is located along 16th Street and is home to the 13-basin cascading fountain, one of the longest in North America. In March, the National Park Service (NPS) partially closed the park as work began to restore the fountain, which has been closed since about 2019. But the fountain, along with the lower reflective pool at the lower plaza, reopened to visitors on Thursday, welcoming back the community to the park. “This is not just a luxury. This is something we all need in our lives. We need our village greens. And it’s so wonderful to have this one coming back to life,” said Steve Coleman, director of Washington Parks and People.
