As the year comes to a close, we revisit an incredible moment from Design Week Cape Town.
Langa’s Lerotholi Avenue became a living stage as Onesimo Bam (@o_n_e_s_i_m_o_b_a_m ) unveiled Progression IV, alongside a spoken word performance by Uno July (@unojuly ) and live piano by Ntando Ngcume (@ntando_ngcume ) – a powerful reminder of how public space can bring art and community together. This moment, supported by V&A Watershed @vawatershed ) formed part of Open Langa, linked to the global Open Streets @openstreetsafrica movement that began in Bogotá and continues to reshape cities around the world. Open Langa Edition returns on a monthly basis, closing Lerotholi Avenue from 10am to 5pm to test safer, more inclusive streets for walking, cycling, culture and everyday community life. The next Open Langa street experiment takes place on Sunday, 25 January 2026, with monthly editions continuing through to April 2026. Brought to you by Young Urbanists (@young_urbanists ), 16 on Lerotholi (16onlerotholi), Bridges Academy (@bridges.academy ), the City of Cape Town (@cityofct ) and Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis (@geordin.hill.lewis ), with support from Safe Passage ZA (@safepassageza )and Langa Bicycle Hub (@langabicyclehub ). Photographs captured on film by Andile Buka (@buka_andile ) Fashion show produced by Thandekile Mkize (@themetastylist ) and Amanda Msimang (@amanda_mandibles )

Progression IV With Progression IV, fashion artist Onesimo Bam questions the architecture of fashion and explores notions of undoing and uncovering. What is a garment? Who is a model? What is a runway? Bam’s visual language of exposed seams turns construction inside out to reveal the labour, the processes and the hands that shaped each piece. These are not imperfections but declarations, the threads that bind us, the memories within the cloth, made visible. The street becomes the runway. The runway becomes the street. Bam collapses the boundary between performance and everyday life, questioning who gets to occupy the platform and who decides what fashion looks like and who belongs in the frame. Progression IV is the line between finished and unfinished, model and muse, art and utility — the undoing is the creative act itself. Photography by Andile Buka @buka_andile Write up by Simone Schultz @simschultz Produced by Tandekile Mkize @themetastylist Production design by Amanda Msimang @amanda_mandibles Powered by @vandawatershed @designweeksouthafrica @lubanziwines @young_urbanists @16onlerotholi
