“I just want to say, whoever paired us together, I owe you almost everything.” Bernard’s words perfectly sum up what this collaboration has meant to me. Working with him reminded me that collaboration isn’t just a word, it’s a practice, one rooted in trust, curiosity, and care. Being paired with Bernard for this challenge exceeded every expectation I had. It affirmed me not only as a disabled model and creative but as someone deserving of partnership at the highest level of craft. Through strategy meetings that turned into hangouts, strings of texts and phone calls filled with laughter, deep dives into prosthetics, and moments of shared vulnerability, I witnessed what true collaboration between the disabled and non-disabled community looks like. I so admire Bernard’s creative eye and how effortlessly it expands beyond jewelry, into clothing, mechanics, and the nuanced ways form meets function. His ability to see beauty in both accessibility and adaptation reshaped how I viewed my myoelectric prosthetic, transforming it from something utilitarian into something expressive. Bernard, your generosity, patience, and brilliance left an imprint I’ll carry with me forever. You welcomed me into your world with such openness and intention, and in doing so, helped me see my own work and body through a new lens. I’m endlessly grateful for you, and for @tiltingthelens the @cfda and @voguemagazine for bringing us together. Thank you @tommyhilfiger Thank you to @thesineadburke for your mentorship and for helping open this beautiful world to our community. And thank you to the other disabled muses who lifted me up throughout this journey, cheering you on made this truly an honor of a lifetime. 🖤

When the only thing that tops your day on set is a product that actually makes it into your makeup bag IRL. As a model, you get to try and test so many different types of makeup products. Sometimes I leave set with a tight and dry face, other times the shade just doesn’t work without studio lighting. Jones Road Beauty’s new foundation sticks are not only easy to open with their magnetic cap, the formula doesn’t leave my skin dry and the shade match is perfect. We love a brand that is inclusive, thoughtful and most importantly makes products I actually want to use. Launching 5/12! #ad

It’s not handicapped, it’s not differently abled, it’s not handicap-able, it’s not special. It’s not anything that prioritizes your comfort over my agency and free will. Disabled is not a bad word. It’s a descriptor and it’s an identity. It’s the name of a community that is beautiful, complex, vast and proud. Disabled is what ancestors like Judy Heumann, Alice Wong and Audre Lorde called themselves and it’s what I call myself too. Image description: Maya a black woman and forequarter right arm amputee stands in various poses in a textured and embroidered dress with a detachable sleeve. The words “Disabled is not a bad word” is overlaid each image. My first Met Gala fell on the year the theme and exhibition finally celebrated disabled people — and the way we artfully negotiate with life and fashion. My first Met Gala fell on the year my disabled community peaked, and where my connection with one incredible disabled friend @littlefashionstylist led me to working with the talented disabled stylist @kellygoldybrown on my look, and my dear friend @briscalesse created a warm space for us all. My first Met Gala fell on the year the phenomenal @aarianaphilip became the first wheelchair user to grace the Met Gala carpet — in custom @collinastrada My first Met Gala fell on the year the Host Committee included disabled members @thesineadburke @laurenwasser @aimeemullins @lenadunham My first Met Gala was proof that body diversity drives fashion and art into a new stratosphere of innovation, imagination, and empathy. Thank you @beckyschear for the opportunity to document this from the press pen. #metgala

@onehandedoverdressed has been hyperaware of the size of her feet since a middle school growth spurt, cementing her membership in a strangely taboo yet populous group: people with big feet. “Just as acutely, I grew an awareness of all the shoes that didn’t come in my size,” she writes. As a result, she often feels like she’s on a perpetual hunt for cute shoes that actually fit. For her favorite styles, click the link in our bio.
