BTS of the Empty Pockets recording at Abbey Road Studios in London last week. It was an amazing experience to walk the halls of giants who recorded in Studio 2 - Kate Bush, the Beatles, & Oasis to name a few. Thanks for bringing me along for the 🌍 tour. Swipe for cigarette stains from the Beatles on the vintage keys.
BTS from Friends & Family night in my Digital Photo class. I’ve wanted to do an event like this for a while now; Students invited their people to class for an evening portraiture + light play. Thanks to my wonderful students for making it a huge success and for bringing meatballs (+cinnamon rolls + Cheetos + donuts + cheese + camera-shaped cookies).

Start to finish ~ processing wild clay from Lake Michigan Milwaukee shores to pit-firing the pieces in 4 days at Chop Wood Carry Water Residency. It was an absolute dream to learn this process start to finish. Theoretically, I now have way to be a ceramicist for free - foraging and firing myself without a studio. If anyone wants to join my next fire in Milwaukee or Chicago, let’s team up.
Slide 1 - drying the work in the greenhouse pre-fire
2 - collecting at Grant Park in South Milwaukee on the beach
3 - drying it all out, later sifted it through a crack in a bucket to get out the rocks, mixed with some sand with a drill attachment
4 - test tiles
5 - @spontaneousvegetation beautiful ceramics studio at #ChopWoodCarryWaterResidency locked in to make as many pieces as I could in one day
6 & 7 - more greenware pre-fire. All the tiles have different natural slips or underglazes or terra sigillata to test
8 - pre warming by the fire to mitigate shock as we create hot coals
9 - this was the final bed of coals after 2 hours of firing. The Eye of Sauron was an accidental omen.
10 - sandhills cranes passing over the pieces burning. The pieces probably got to around 1200 degrees F since the aluminum was most melted.
11 & 12 - pulling them out in the morning, about 8 hours later, still hot
13 & 14 & 16 - results
15 - notes
A huge thank you to @spontaneousvegetation for all your knowledge, guidance, and care for hosting this experience.
That’s a wrap to the spring semester! I had to share a few things that really made me laugh. Thank you to my wonderful students in digital and darkroom for making it so much fun to teach.
