Narrative Music Video (spec)
It's crazy that we sat on this footage from last summer to only pull it together in the last couple of weeks!
This project had shots and set ups that were only possible with an insane amount of determination and trust amongst us all, travelling all over the Isle of Wight chasing sunsets and views. (And even building a bed on a rocky beach)

Here's how I turned a regular classroom into a cinematic night-time scene in an "architecture museum" with lighting in 5 SIMPLE STEPS👇
Step One: Take Control🔑
Turn off all the house lights and shut all blinds to take control of ambient light☀️💡
If you need ambient light let some daylight in and control its colour temperature with the camera's white balance.
Step Two: Motivational Light🚦
Identify your key light's motivation and mimic it's characteristics! For this scenario, a warm spotlight bounce effect works well as resembles typical lighting in a museum. It is essential that the light has an assumed origin: moonlight, TV light, practical lamp, etc...
Step Three: Create depth🔭
Depth is essential for a 3D-looking (and therefore cinematic) image. This can be done by lighting different layers of the image with different colours and intensities. Rim lighting subjects also gives a subtle halo effect and can stop dark hair or clothing getting muddled with dark bathgrounds.
Step Four: Set the scene🏜️
Add set pieces, wardrobe choices and even consider lights to set the scene. My two aims here were to show it's nighttime, and that we're surrounded by architectural models. I also added some purple to widen the colour spectrum of the image.
Step 5: Grading🖥️💅
Grading is about emphasising part of the image to grab attention and to look as intended on set. It works hand in hand with lighting.
I simply adjust the contrast and exposure to ensure my subject is well exposed and that other aspects are visible but not competing. Masks can be used to adjust different areas separately.
Then, control each colour's hue, saturation and luminosity (HSL)
Done. 👍
Enjoy your cinematic scene you created from nothing!

It’s not just a portfolio, it’s a way of showing I’m not just doing this for fun anymore
Having finished university, my instagram content doesn't convey my personal brand, professionalism or quality that a portfolio should. So this felt like the next step. A place that represents me as a professional and that will help secure trust in my ability as a freelance videographer and cinematographer📸
