We went to the coast! Enjoyed the sunshine, small batch root beer, finding new secret beaches, and watching the dune buggies. I brought along my recently finished Matches Tank, worked up in the last gasps of my Brooklyn Tweed Arbor in Burnished and Kettle. Perfect little project to finish up the last random skeins you might have kicking around. If you’re looking for a good substitution Ritual Dyes Marona works up as a perfect one-for-one swap, at least for me. I really wanted a full wool version of this top for layering for Spring and Fall wear. With that in mind, I added three short rows around the shoulder ribbing to bring the width of the strap out further, without adding bulk at the underarm. So now it’s done and it’s the middle of May! Perfect timing to get back to work on the Ritual Dyes Undine DK version, and join in on the Summer Undine KAL.

Lis has been an enormous help these past few months preparing for the Puget Sound Local Yarn Store Tour coming up next week. She helps me once a week, either scouring, mordanting, dyeing, or skeining. Either way, it’s a break on my body and for that I’m grateful. We don’t normally dye together so this day was special! We had the music playing and the garage doors open. It was a very good day! Thanks, Lis, for being an awesome human!!! 🫶🏻 #naturallydyedyarn #weld #madderroot #regenerativewool #studiovibes

“Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself”. Laine Magazine’s new summer issue, Damson, is now officially available! The mood is soft summer garden, fueled by iced mint tea, fresh bouquets, and lazy sunshine knitting. I had a blast designing the Camp Bandana in Ritual Dyes Undine fingering weight yarn. They have a newly expanded palette this summer and every skein is stunning. This seeded rib scarf is worked in two cool complimentary colors, Siren and Prairie Flax, but I recommended picking up some of their brights too (and don’t forget to grab a skein of the last few golden Forsythia while you can!) Undine is a cotton and linen blend so really, wear it all day, at the beach, in the garden, out on a hike, don’t worry about getting it mussed, it washes up so easily. The Undine MAL is coming up in a few weeks and this is a very approachable pattern, perfect for social summer knitting. It’s also super size adjustable, just knit with increases until it’s the depth you want (or until you’re halfway through your yarn), then reverse the process back to the far point. @laine_magazine @ritualdyes

We are so honored to have Undine featured in the new edition of @laine_magazine ! Lis Smith of @oldsaltstudios designed this gorgeous bandana pattern with a seeded rib stitch and slipped-stitch edges. For her sample, she used Siren and Prarie Flax, but we’ve put together a bunch more to celebrate the release of the pattern! The options are endless here. The Undinecolor family is very intentional - we created it with color matching in mind, so the colors all work harmoniously with each other. Kits are available now on our website, as well as the magazine.

Pattern Preview Day for Laine 28, Damson! I’m so very honored to be a part of this new issue which will be published on May 7th, 2026. This is a gorgeous collection of knits of all sorts and the photography was inspired by the movie The Hours, with the inimitable Meryl Streep. As a stylist I often work with films as inspiration and this shoot will absolutely transport you to an English country garden at the height of summer. My contribution is the Camp Bandana, an easy to work (but not so simple as to be boring) accessory in seeded rib stitch. I was lucky to use @ritualdyes Undine in fingering weight for the yarn, which makes this little scarf perfect for warmer weather, when you still need a little something to keep the AC chill away or to keep the sun off your neck. It’s written for two sizes but it’s the type of project that is easily adapted to the yarn you have at hand, just knit until it’s the size you want! More to come soon, I hope you check out the new issue from @laine_magazine !

Rose City Yarn Crawl starts today! Here is the Mystery KAL Shawl, The Labyrinth Shawl, which is a mystery no longer. I had so much fun knitting along with all of you for this KAL, and now I have two shawls to enjoy this spring. The original one was done with a light background and color shifting contrast color, and my new dark and high contrast version reverses the color dominance. The Light Labyrinth is knit up in Spincycle yarns Dyed in the Wool in Wollolo and Xolla Pastoreta in Fum and the Dark Labyrinth is worked in Harrisville Designs Shetland in White and Wooldreamers 90 Varas in Onyx. All these yarns are lovely to work with and have beautiful color palettes to play with. Check out all the Ravelry projects to see the huge breadth of color creativity for this project, I was inspired by everyone’s choices. Many thanks to @rosecityyarncrawl for their support and facilitation for the MKAL! I hope to see you all out there at the local shops this weekend, stop me and say hi! First published in Laine Magazine’s Winter 24 issue, the South Sister Hat pattern is now available as a stand alone PDF download available on Ravelry. Packed full of cables, this hat calls for one or two skeins of your favorite worsted weight yarn. Stash dive for some leftovers skeins from a recently finished sweater or come see me and @wool.and.palette today on the last day of @sacred_sheep and we’ll chat natural color choices with you. I have a bunch of these stashed by the front door, ready for day trips to the Oregon high desert, dunes on the central coast, or just a fall walk through Laurelhurst Park. Slide no. 1 - original sample in Brooklyn Tweed Tones in Acer Undertone (Laine Magazine photo credit) Slide no. 2 - sample in Hudson + West Forge in Aspen Slide no. 3 - sample in Wool & Palette Shaniko Worsted in Denim Slide no. 4 - sample in De Rerum Gilliatt in Eucalyptus

Today’s the day! Stand alone South Sister pattern will be available on Ravelry and beautiful new samples will be on display at the @wool.and.palette booth at @sacred_sheep . We loaded up the shelves today will so many beautiful skeins of fingering, sport, DK, and worsted yarns, all naturally dyed in Emily’s Portland studio. South Sister comes in two sizes and takes between 225 and 265 yards of worsted weight yarn. If you pick up a skein of Wool & Palette’s Shaniko Worsted at Sacred Sheep you’ll *just* be able to get the medium size done, that thick double brim and allover cables takes almost a whole skein. The large will take two skeins (for sure if you want to add a fun pompom on top!) We’ll be talking all things yarn and natural dyes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, please stop by for a chat and the chance to squish super lovely yarn. Coming next week! I’ve been working on sprucing up the South Sister Hat pattern for stand alone publication. Until now it has only been available through Laine Magazine, Issue 23. But to coincide with Sacred Sheep next week I’ll have a new PDF version up on Ravelry for download. I’ve been lending a hand in the @wool.and.palette dye studio over the past few months and I’ll be assisting Emily in her booth at @sacred_sheep Friday 11/14 through Sunday 11/16. We’ll have several samples of South Sister in house to try on along with bountiful armfuls of just the nicest naturally dyed yarn you ever did see. Don’t ask me what my favorite color is, they are all gorgeous. Come over to the booth and say hi if you’re attending Sacred Sheep or check out the updated pattern online. The countdown is on!

It’s been a few weeks since the launch of the new DARUMA Lumières crochet book, which includes a cozy hood pattern of mine, Hume. It’s constructed out of two different styles and sizes of blocks, so a perfect project to work on bit by bit. I’m getting all my winter travel plans in order and these blocks will be a great portable project (yes, I’ve started a second one already!) I designed this because I love a hooded sweatshirt, it’s almost my uniform, but my best go to vintage sweatshirt doesn’t have a hood. You can wear Hume up as a hood but it also doubles as a snuggly cowl when the hood is worn down, just the thing when your coat or favorite crewneck sweatshirt isn’t keeping your neck warm enough. If you’re in the Portland area you can pick up a copy of the book at @ritualdyes and @closeknitpdx , otherwise you can order the book through the @amirisushop . Happy Fall all!

I’m very excited to share one of my forthcoming designs, the Fortuna Mittens. Once again I’ve had the honor and privilege to work with the folks over at Laine Publishing and these mitts are part of the new book 52 Weeks of Scrap Yarn. If you know me even a little you’ll know I save everything, especially crafting materials, so this theme was one I was immediately drawn to. I’d been wondering for a while about doing colorwork without a chart, and if that was just crazy, and would anyone even get the idea. It’s just knitting and changing colors and stitch counts whenever you want. Totally freeform! Thankfully Laine got what I was going for and now I get to share it with you! Pre-orders for the new book are open now for an April release. If I get my act together, I’m going to delve more into this design over on Substack, I’m the same @oldsaltstudios , so come find me there as I work on getting some content up for you all. I’m even working on a little coloring sheet to help guide and plot your color selections. Beautiful photos 1-3 from @laine_magazine . Yarn from @brooklyntweed , fingering weight Loft and Tones Light (full color list used up on my Ravelry). Thanks as always for the kind words already shared!
