TODAY: Curator Tour of 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝟰 with insights into the planning and curation Saturday 16 May, 3-4PM South Open is our annual open call focused on artists connected to South London, supporting a community facing rising rents and shrinking studio space. Since launching in 2023, we’ve exhibited 46 artists across three editions, selected from hundreds of applications each year. The first edition featured 8 artists, followed by 14 in 2024, and 24 in 2025, reflecting the breadth and energy of practices rooted in South London today. This year, we received over 700 applications and will be exhibiting the work of thirteen artists for South Open 4. 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝟰: Filip Lav Pharmakos III (Beatrice), 2026

185 x 85 cm The exhibition is now open until 30 May at Peckham Oasis Gallery Open Thursday - Saturday, 12pm-5pm Filip Lav’s artistic practice intertwines evocative elements of 19th-century romanticism with the fragmented geometry of modernist abstraction. His paintings juxtapose the symbolic legacy of romanticism with the cubist language of minimal abstraction. Often, the foregrounds are painted in a floating symbolic dreamworld that spans across multiple canvases, casting various mythological characters, from vampires to spirits and angels. These mythological figures play a significant role in Lav’s inner landscapes, viewed as the visual inheritance of 19th-century dark romanticism, standing in contrast to the fragmented modernist structures of the paintings’ outlines. Each composition comprises multiple combined rectangular canvases that often evoke a cascading crucifix form. Initially sourced from different works or painted apart from one another, these parts come together in unexpected combinations, where fragments of diverse identities intersect, creating a charged quality. Filip Lav (b. 1991, Vienna) is an artist currently living and working in London. Lav holds an MFA from Columbia University, New York (2016), and a BFA from the Ruskin School of Fine Art, University of Oxford (2012). He completed the Turps Studio Programme in London in 2024. I explore the poetic nature of how oil reacts with resurfacing imagery, keeping the process intimate, boundless, and driven by discovery. I write before and after the work, shaping each piece as a living organism. My practice recently has drawn on Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy, chaos and order, Dionysus and Apollo, rigorously restructuring narrative within object, form, and space. An economy of marks, gestures, and opacity lets abstraction travel, figures moving in and out of visual space through a guttural crescendo of tempos. My aim is painting about paintings: finding ground, eliminating noise, reaching the unknown. I want viewers to enter a unique dialogue as subjects. I seek to sublimate, corner and vacate the dust leaving the lips of the sublime. 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝟰: Tian Mu Aluminium Body 01, 2024 Cast aluminium (Unique) 200 x 120 x 8.5 cm The exhibition is now open until 30 May at Peckham Oasis Gallery Open Thursday - Saturday, 12pm-5pm Tian Mu (b.1985, China) lives and works in London. He received an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2011, and undertook postgraduate studies in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art. His practice spans painting, sculpture, and relief, and is grounded in sustained research into industrial materials and production processes, examining how bodily experience is shaped, regulated, and delayed within different social and material conditions. Positioning the body as a site of perception and cognition, Tian Mu explores how touch, intimacy, protection, and distance are negotiated in lived realities. Working with fragmented or cropped bodily forms, he presents the body as an operative system rather than a representational subject. Through states of suspension and incompletion, his work foregrounds uncertainty in acts of viewing, inviting audiences to reconsider their relationship to their surroundings. Henry is a London-based multidisciplinary artist and curator whose practice spans textile, glass, ceramic, painting and film. He studied at Chelsea College of Arts and went on to complete an MA at Royal College of Art. His work has since been exhibited internationally, from London to Hong Kong and New York, and is held in major public and private collections. He regularly tutors across leading UK institutions including Goldsmiths (University of London), Royal College of Art, City & Guilds of London Art School, Chelsea College of Arts, and Arts University Bournemouth.
