Winning the Grierson Award for Best Wildlife Documentary is a huge honour! It was a great night at Camden for myself and the Off the Fence team receiving this prestigious award for our feature length film Silverback.
I’m grateful to the BBC and France TV for standing with us to make this film happen, when other broadcasters didn’t want to take the risk filming in the hostile environment.
This Grierson award has been a reminder to me of my ambition to give voice to exceptional people without means to be heard. Silverback shows dedication and expertise of rangers and conservationists, to whom these gorillas are crucial. Protecting the gorillas means saving the forests and a way for the Pole Pole foundation to fight against the devastating and prolonged poverty and hunger inflicted on the regional communities. I am eternally grateful to Pole Pole’s founder John Kahekwa for granting us access and Papa Lambert, head of gorilla habituation, to make this project happen.
I made a vow to continue to support the rangers who tirelessly work protecting these forests. They dedicate their time and energy, often without pay nor adequate equipment, putting their lives in danger, to protect these Eastern Lowland Gorilla in harsh and rugged terrain. And I won’t give up on them.
