Introducing Sight, Cite, Site – a collaboration between @officeofthings and Orders for the Ragdale Ring competition. The Ring is located on the grounds of a historic home built by architect Howard van Doren Shaw. We were interested in how outdoor performance spaces could interact with the house, and what new experiences for performers and audience might result. Our design deploys four “stage sets” around the site. The stage sets create unexpected optical illusions (Sight) which illustrate the house’s design (Cite) at key locations (Site). 1: The Entry Set creates an illusion of a circle aligned with the front door. 2: Site Plan 3-4: The Main Stage Set appears as a half circle, with mirrored bands which reflect the house’s back façade 5-6: The fountain set creates a striped half circle when viewed from the porch 7-8: The Corner Set features a dynamic configuration which appears as a circle from three different points 9-10: Assembly Diagrams. A: Painted marine grade plywood B: Pressure treated 2x framing C: Mirrored acrylic D: Stability fin E: Hidden diagonal braces F: Floral backside of panels mimic wallpaper from inside the house See more on the Orders website (link in bio) #chicagoarchitecture #architecturecompetition #setdesign #opticalillusion

Our favorite outtake shooting with the brilliant @matthewmillmanphoto , when real life drama interrupts our careful staging - a crew member unwittingly becomes a model. Suspended above the bar, Halo evokes a skeletal bone form, its ribbed surface catching light and shadow that shift throughout the day with a soft opalescence, set against the sky framed by the all-glass ceiling. With Halo, Office of Things was dedicated to exploring materiality and the effects of light, particularly in the hotel's verdant space with its all-glass ceiling. We observed how the public space changes throughout the day and aimed to create a design that transforms with it. We rigorously tested a plant-based biopolymer material to achieve a bone-like chalkiness during the day, which then transforms into a warm, milky matte finish when illuminated in the evening. Halo is a site specific bespoke light sculpture for the atrium of Hyatt’s newly renovated Greenwich Hotel. As a new centerpiece within a historic site, the 18-ft diameter installation, balances between tradition and novelty, in both its form and its fabrication. The fixture’s circular geometry is deeply embedded in the building’s history. Originally built in the 1920s as Conde Nast’s headquarters, the site plan featured a ring road approach that remains today. When it was converted to a hotel in 1986, the gesture was reinforced in arches and circular ornamentation on the building facade. The motif has since been echoed in architectural elements throughout the public areas of the hotel. Halo amplifies this visual language, distilling it into a singular floating ring of light. Suspended above the bar, Halo emanates a warm glow that spills onto the surfaces below, reflecting off a nearby fountain and filtering through the trees and foliage throughout the atrium. Its smooth interior profile contrasts the ribbed exterior silhouette, and provides changing perceptions and views as visitors move around the hotel. While the milky, translucent light and brass fittings speak to the historic setting, the fabrication techniques that achieve the timeless, weightless effect are solidly contemporary. The east, park facing facade of our proposal to Oak Park's design competition for a new field house, "Extensions", showing the clerestory form, covered outdoor seating, and how the addition embraces existing old-growth trees. Extensions, aims to conserve and adapt rather than to erase, serving a historic, a cultural and an environmental need.
