We have been back in Millport with filmmaker @chrisleslie to document the completed refurbishment and extension of Millport Town Hall. It has been rewarding to see the building back in active community use following years of vacancy, with the restored hall and new spaces supporting a wide range of local activities and events. Our thanks to Rhona Gourley (Chair of Trustees), Alan Paterson (Venue Manager), @rmcameron (Project Architect), and @sambrown7091 (Project Director) for sharing their reflections on the project and the collaborative process behind bringing the Town Hall back into long-term civic use. @millporttownhall @designengworkshop @harleyhaddow @alliedsurveyors #odonnellbrown #architecture #millport #retrofit #design

Drumbrae, University of Edinburgh The project sits within a wider Learning Landscape Framework for Cockburn Woods, developed in collaboration with landscape architects Land Use Consultants. A network of tactile trails, sensory planting and woodland clearings will encourage visitors to move through the landscape and engage with natural processes, from soil and water, to plants, wildlife and seasonal change. Along these routes, a series of small encounter points will create places to pause, gather and reflect. These include raised platforms, sculptural seating and simple timber structures that frame views, encourage listening, and provide moments of interaction with the woodland environment. Operating entirely off-grid and powered by renewable energy, the facility demonstrates how small, carefully considered interventions can support education, biodiversity and long-term landscape stewardship. @edinburghuniversity @uoe_sustainability @lucinsider @harleyhaddow Armour Construction Consultancy #architecture #offgrid #timberconstruction #sustainability #universityofedinburgh

Drumbrae, University of Edinburgh The building adopts a light-touch, low-carbon architectural approach, inspired by the simple working structures found across the Stirlingshire landscape. Designed as a contemporary interpretation of a rural shelter or shieling, the building is formed from a simple timber structural grid and raised on screw-pile foundations. This allows the structure to sit lightly above the ground, minimising disturbance to the landscape and avoiding the need for concrete. A sheltered external deck provides space for larger group gatherings, while a small insulated interior contains an accessible WC, kitchenette and learning space. Together these spaces offer both protection from the elements and a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape. @edinburghuniversity @uoe_sustainability @lucinsider @harleyhaddow Armour Construction Consultancy #architecture #offgrid #timberconstruction #sustainability #universityofedinburgh

Drumbrae, University of Edinburgh We are currently developing a new off-grid outdoor learning facility for the University of Edinburgh, located within the Ochil Hills just north of Bridge of Allan. Set within the University’s 430-hectare Drumbrae estate, the project forms part of its wider woodland creation programme, an initiative aimed at restoring habitats, capturing carbon and supporting the University’s net-zero ambitions. The facility will provide a small base for outdoor teaching, research and fieldwork, supporting staff, students and community groups engaging with the evolving woodland landscape. It will also host outreach activities with local schools, helping people of all ages connect more closely with nature through hands-on learning and exploration. @edinburghuniversity @uoe_sustainability @lucinsider @harleyhaddow Armour Construction Consultancy #architecture #offgrid #timberconstruction #sustainability #universityofedinburgh

Millport Town Hall on the Isle of Cumbrae is now complete! A fabric-first retrofit strategy underpins the project, improving the building's environmental performance through targeted insulation, repair of original stonework, and the integration of roof-mounted photovoltaic panels. A new extension provides additional access and accommodation, while three holiday-let apartments help sustain the building's ongoing use. @millporttownhall @designengworkshop @harleyhaddow @alliedsurveyors 📸 @davidbarbour

Millport Town Hall on the Isle of Cumbrae is now complete! The refurbishment creates a series of flexible, hard-working spaces to support a wide range of community activities, centred around the restored performance hall. New and adapted spaces include a community hub, heritage and conservation centre, accessible facilities, and a sheltered garden, all arranged to allow intuitive movement through the building. @millporttownhall @designengworkshop @harleyhaddow @alliedsurveyors 📸 @davidbarbour

Millport Town Hall on the Isle of Cumbrae is now complete! Built in 1878 and vacant since 2012, Millport Town Hall has been carefully refurbished and extended to bring the building back into active community use. The project repairs the existing red sandstone and slate structure while introducing robust new elements that sit clearly alongside the historic fabric, supporting the building's long-term civic and social role. @millporttownhall @designengworkshop @harleyhaddow @alliedsurveyors 📸 @davidbarbour
