🇧🇯 Sous l'imposante "porte du non-retour" à Ouidah, au Bénin, important point de départ des esclaves lors de la traite transatlantique, des grappes de touristes venus de la capitale économique voisine, Cotonou, du Nigeria ou du Togo viennent s'imprégner de l'histoire du continent.
Ces 10 dernières années, le Bénin a misé sur le développement du tourisme en choisissant de promouvoir son histoire, sa culture et son patrimoine.
Haute de près de 17 mètres, la "porte du non-retour", au bord de la plage, a été complètement rénovée. Sur l'édifice ocre et doré sont représentés des esclaves enchaînés. Non loin, une réplique grandeur nature de l'Aurore, un des derniers trois-mâts à avoir quitté Ouidah pour Cuba vers 1860, ouvrira bientôt pour accueillir un musée immersif sur la traite négrière.
"Ca nous rappelle d'où l'on vient. C'est important de développer ce côté touristique car on a une histoire très riche, peu connue du monde, qu'on veut valoriser", explique Arsène Ahounou, ingénieur de Cotonou en visite pour la journée.
Un peu plus loin, en ville, déambulent les mêmes groupes de touristes qui viennent cette fois découvrir la culture vaudou (ou vodun, en langue locale fon) dans le temple des Pythons, datant du XIIIe siècle.
Pour encourager le tourisme, le Bénin a lancé de grands chantiers d'infrastructures. "Nous ne sommes pas un pays ayant des richesses minières. Donc il faut chercher où se trouve notre richesse", résume Alain Godonou, chargé de mission du président au patrimoine et aux musées.
"Or l'histoire fait que le Bénin est un pays de grandes cultures, de grandes traditions historiques et qui a été témoin d'un moment important de l'histoire de l'humanité, la traite négrière notamment", poursuit-il, disant espérer que d'ici 10 ans le secteur représentera 10 à 15% du PIB, contre 6% actuellement.
Dimanche, l'artisan de cette politique touristique, Patrice Talon, laissera son fauteuil de président après deux mandats. Grand favori pour lui succéder, son dauphin Romuald Wadagni a promis de poursuivre ces chantiers.

In Lagos, Detty December doesn’t stop at the dancefloor.

Opulence fills the space: bold outfits, glossy surfaces, dramatic light.
Built for social media, these rooms extend the night.
The music bleeds through the walls.
The party doesn’t pause. It reframes itself.

AFP presents a reportage of 50 pictures taken by photographer Olympia de Maismont of Nigeria’s “Detty December” in Lagos between between November 21 and December 15, 2025.
“Detty December” refers to the lively Lagos tradition where December is packed with nonstop parties, concerts, nightlife, and cultural events, fuelled by returning diaspora Nigerians and heightened local celebration. The city becomes especially vibrant and crowded as entertainment and tourism peak. The spelling “detty” comes from Nigerian Pidgin English, where it is a playful version of “dirty” that implies excess, intensity, and carefree fun.
