"I think the biggest challenge for me when I started painting graffiti was the relationship between me and my family. My father and mother, they are pretty traditional. They are business people. So they wanted me to finish my degree and then find a regular job. That’s what the majority of parents in China want their kids to do. But what I liked was to always go out at night, paint graffiti and come back late. So they were quite worried about me. I didn’t really live with my parents after I got into university, so I felt
released. I went bombing everywhere, even on the school campus." - Excerpt from interview with a Shanghai graffiti writer
"I’ve been to the police station multiple times because of graffiti. One time we painted this abandoned truck. The owner came back and saw us, reported it, and police called me directly using my real name and phone number. They can find you via facial recognitions software, linked to surveillance cameras. I didn’t rat out the others—just said one name to protect the rest. We paid over 2,000 RMB in compensation and split the cost as a crew. That was the first time, but in that one month I went to the police station three times." - Excerpt from interview with a Shanghai graffiti writer
