Meet the founder and Executive Chef of Ocho, RJ! @chefrjsmith23 is a Drexel student studying Culinary Arts & Science.
He moved to Philly from the Bay Area, and brought along with him an impressive, star-studded resume, including his time at Californios Restaurant as well as global experience at Jean-Georges and three Michelin star Core by Clare Smyth!
He started Ocho as a way to share his food with people. Despite working at top restaurants and studying culinary arts, he rarely had the opportunity to create dishes that were truly his own. Ocho gives him the freedom to showcase flavors, techniques, and traditions he chooses, including underutilized and underrepresented ingredients from his culture—something he considers the most rewarding part of the experience.
In his free time he enjoys mountain biking , studying Afro-Caribbean history, and time on the water!

Over the past year, Ocho Supper Club has grown from intimate suppers into a community—feeding over 2,000 guests, hosting over 40 experiences, and collaborating with chefs and partners across Philadelphia.
We take great pride and respect in in serving as a space and platform for Afro-Caribbean culture in Philly, and to share these stories through food, hospitality, and gathering.
This work is only possible because of an incredible team, purveyors, and a community that shows up night in and night out.
