The ocean sunfish, or mola mola, is the heaviest bony fish on Earth. Adults can reach more than 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) and measure over 3 m (10 ft) from fin tip to fin tip.
Their tall, slab-like bodies and oversized fins give them a look unlike anything else in the ocean. Despite their size, they’re gentle giants that spend much of their time drifting near the surface after deep dives to hunt jellyfish and other soft-bodied prey.
Molas grow incredibly fast too — they start life smaller than a coin and can gain hundreds of pounds in a single year.
