Join us on Monday, May 18th from 6-8pm where we will open up the space for a discussion on the local hip-hop community and DIY music scene.
This is your opportunity to engage with the folks who are laying the groundwork in this space and dive into some of the ways that we as a community can build better infrastructure for underrepresented music genres in our local venues.
We’ll be collecting questions ahead of time through a poll on our story and will open up the floor for an audience Q+A at the event. The RVA Venue Town Hall is free to attend, all are welcome.
Let’s build a stronger, more connected music community together!
🎤: The event will be moderated by Doug Nunnally, founder of @theauricular and the @newlinmusicprize and board member at @wrir97.3fm

Richmond noise-rock outliers Dumb Waiter return
with Change (July 31, @osseincollective ), a 13-track shift for the underground favorites,
introducing vocals for the first time while maintaining the band’s experimental sensibilities.
A preview arrives today with the release of the album’s title track, and an accompanying video
directed by the band’s own Nicholas Crider. “Over the past few years I’ve gone through a lot of major life events. With each one, I’ve found myself lying awake thinking ‘I’m afraid of change. Please let’s not change. Please don’t change on me.’ No matter how desperate you are to stay put, life will push you forward. The lyric ‘I don’t like change’ feels like one of the most universal, simple, and honest things I could say. Despite that fear, I’m learning to lean into who I am, and I’m less afraid of stepping out of the proverbial uniforms that society, scenes, friends and family may impose. It feels like a perfect statement for the band’s newly formed identity.”
Previously described by Decibel as “experimental freakies,” and by MetalSucks as a band “that
isn’t pushing the envelope so much as shoving it right over the side of a goddamn cliff,” Change
sees Dumb Waiter trading abstraction for urgency, still unpredictable but more direct in its
message.
“What more is there to say without saying anything?” saxophonist/vocalist Tristan Brennis explains of the band’s decision to include vocals on the new album.. “We quickly realized that we had a whole lot to say about the current state of the world and this hyper-acceleration of society that I think we’re all feeling day in day out.”
Recorded with producer and mixer Kevin Bernstein at Baltimore’s @developing_nations studio and mastered by @plotkinworks
Change retains the band’s density while sharpening its delivery. As drummer/vocalist Nathaniel Roseberry notes: “We put a lot of effort into creating
multifaceted songs that didn’t present as complex. Even if there is ridiculous syncopation happening in the rhythm section, the other guys are smoothing it over to still keep that pop
feel.”
History happened a couple weeks ago at Dorey Park and I had the privilege to play a v smol part! My amazing, creative, piscearean sister @yeahthatsarapp created the Scriptorium as part of the Richmond Ren-Faire, allowing me to time travel with her and @jerichosmama . A time was had ♥️ & it’s one that I’ll cherish.
1st photo - packing my car after the @rvarenfaire was sad and melancholy - I wanted more!
The rest of the photos capture a fraction of the fun and excitement of the experience of the Inaugural Richmond Renaissance Faire. It was a pleasure performing at the Canal stage! I had a great time with my Witcher crew, and it was a blast running into other bombastic crews the rest of the weekend. There was a massive variety of things to do, guilds to visit, foods to eat, fights to see, jousts to scream at, and vendors to spend money on.
It was evident the organizers - @rvaamanda & co - had a lot of experience with large events coming into this faire. They seemingly thought of everything ahead of time, and if anything came up, they found a solution quickly. The organizers ran a tight ship. It felt good to be part of such a well oiled machine. As both a performer, and a guest, I found the atmosphere was one of ease and celebration - like I was back at the Gwar-b-q.
Over at the Canal stage, @_worm_woman was incredible and elevated all the artists with hard work and experience. It was an honor to perform with @bardcity.band , @forestofwires and @theexpatriots
I love how the RVA Ren faire went down and cannot wait for next year!
It was a long week at Dorey Park for the @rvarenfaire amidst the intense build out, the extreme weather and the break-neck paced break down and load out yesterday.
Richmond really turned out and brought its beauty to the faire, from costumes to characters to art; workshops, food, music, wares, storytelling, history. So many core memories were made this weekend.
@ashmeanythingg and @rvaamanda assembled a phenomenal, diverse team of problem solvers for this event. I feel really lucky to have experienced this arc of a story in year one and am excited to see the trajectory of @viragoalley in the years to come.
The weather is warming up, the street life is back, and we’re kicking off the spring while celebrating our 21st birthday.
If you’ve never been to a First Friday, here’s a glimpse inside an opening at Gallery5, where art, collaboration, community, and action collide. The heartbeat of this corner is getting louder.
Like a metamorphosis, she is shedding her skin and entering a new era.
Happy birthday, baby! #Gallery54ever #longlivegallery5
