An excerpt from my Nicer Tuesdays talk at @earthackney , where I discuss the making of ÈKÓ, published by @guesteditions ⭐️ I talk about what drew me to the work, how I went about making images in Lagos, and how serendipity sits at the heart of it all. This was one of the most useful exercises I've done as an artist. It forced me to think carefully about the work and articulate what I'm actually trying to say with it. In many ways the making is the easiest part and it's everything that comes after that's difficult. The collating, the analysing, the sequencing, the displaying. Even just getting people to look at the pictures was a struggle initially lol. Am grateful for the opportunity from @itsnicethat and I think this talk set a benchmark for how I want to understand and speak about my own practice going forward. Pics from the talk I gave at @earthackney a couple of weeks back for @itsnicethat Nicer Tuesdays 🪩👊🏿 I was pretty nervy before speaking in front of so many people lol. Once the ball got rolling though, the words did proceed to come out 🫢 I talked about how I got into photography, nightlife, DJing, serendipity, disco, @dtmfro , cricket, Lagos, @nhcarnivalldn , @thenycdownlow and how all of it is connected and formed the backbone to my process in making Èkó that came out last year with @guesteditions . I hope people found what I had to say interesting . Having been a fan of the series before, it was great to contribute myself 🙏🏿 Thanks to the other wicked speakers and to everyone that came down as well @olivia_hingley , @annaclai.re and the rest of the @itsnicethat team for your curation and production efforts. Portraits of Kehinde and Taiwo that I made for the artwork of our upcoming @dtmfro shindig, taken in London, 2026 🪩 I met these two a couple weeks back in Vauxhall, just after leaving @zone6press studio where I’d been going over some of my Berlin images with Johnny. As I stepped out, I spotted them – one of those moments where you gotta act quick. A corner of my eye is always devoted for faces for our posters, but afro twins was next level, especially given I'd always been a fan of images of the Islington Twins from back in the day ⭐️. I got Kehinde’s details and texted him the week after. I told them to meet me at Bank and wear matching suits if they had them. I bought the shades from Tiger on the way there because I thought that would be the cherry. I love photography for moments of serendipity like this – those small, chance encounters that turn into something bigger. It reminded me of something @akinbodeakinbiyi wrote in the foreword to my book, Ékò: “The longed for goal is serendipity, the coming together of what is within with what is out there. A fine, acute moment of happenstance, coincidence, being there, being prepared too to take, make, that particular image.” That’s exactly what this felt like. Hoping this is just the beginning with Kehinde and Taiwo as I think there are more posters to be made 😉 Big ups @riddladesigns on the design and to @tabi.ashnorm + @ben.tolu.matheson for your constant assistance ⭐️. Am thinking to print a few large if people are interested in getting some :) Party is on 17.04 and we'll be joined by @terrencemichaell and @helenastardj at @thecarpetshop.peckham . Pictures I made around Berlin, 2022-2025 🫶🏽 I am working on compiling images I made in Berlin atm. I can't quite put my finger on why I like to photograph there so much. I think life does have a fluidity that I don't recognise in London as often. There's more hanging out, more spontaneity. Fewer people on the grind and more working atypical jobs. Leisure seems to have a bit more social currency. Have also noticed this in Marseille too. I have made hundreds of images from my wanderings around the city; friends, strangers, buildings, parks, dinner parties and late night bars. I’ve always been inspired by the work of artists like Tillmans or Goldin, who document from a quite rare and intimate perspective, and I feel like my work here is drawn from a similar impulse. Will keep sharing a few of my faves on IG and I look forward to seeing what form the work eventually takes ⭐️ #wip #photography #berlin #documentary #streetphotography
