First Fridays have been a staple in Oakland & the entire bay for years, but now its future is uncertain… There are a lot of people tying some violent incidents Downtown/Uptown to the event, even though they’ve happened outside its hours & location.
This has led to some sponsors pulling out & creating a huge funding issue. Now they’re asking for the community’s support to keep it alive.
I spoke with First Fridays Director, Venessa McGhee, about why this iconic event seems to be blamed for some of the things that have happened in Oakland, and what the future will look like for First Fridays.

im not debating with anyone on my thoughts.
this isn’t just about first fridays, it’s about systems and leadership
yes, people need to be held accountable AND environments and what’s tolerated matter too
other cities in the bay don’t tolerate certain behavior the same way because structure and leadership matter
so blaming first fridays for problems that have existed for years doesn’t add up
at the end of the day, it’s a community event. look out for each other and be kind, even AFTER it ends
as a community organizer, i would genuinely welcome the opportunity to sit down with leadership to advocate for bay area residents who are actively trying to build community in oakland and be part of real solutions

Quote ♻️ For 13 years, First Fridays has been the heartbeat of our city, celebrating culture, art, and community. But now, organizers say the event’s survival is under threat.
The issue? Negative publicity linking the festival to violent incidents that happen hours after the event has already ended. Even though Oakland Police Chief James Beere clarified that recent incidents occurred miles and hours away from the festivities, sponsors are pulling out.
"We can't have fingers pointed at our event," says Director Venessa McGhee. "We believe activating the streets with positivity is what drives out the negativity."
Local businesses like Black Forest Kitchen say they see a 50% boost in business during the event. Without First Fridays, our local economy and community spirit take a hit.
