Happy 65th Independence Day, Sierra Leone! 🇸🇱✨ Our African history is filled with incredible kingdoms, societies, and leaders of extraordinary strength, wisdom and resilience, which I truly believe lives in each and every one of us. My father, who served as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, gave a speech back home recently, which stuck with me: “Every one of us, regardless of ethnicity, religion and political affiliation, have to commit to being responsive to the needs of our motherland.” ~Dr. Cecil Blake That’s the legacy he is passing down, one of service, and it’s one I’m proud to carry forward. 💚🤍💙 Watching my daughter grow up, I think about what kind of future we’re building for our children. One where they’re proud of where they come from and have real opportunities ahead of them. That’s why it’s important for us to come together, those of us across the Diaspora and those at home, to play our part in the development of our nation and our motherland. This International Women’s Day feels a little different for me. 🕊️ While I’m currently on the long road to recovery after a difficult week, I’ve realized that ‘strength’ isn’t just about what I can do alone, it’s about the incredible circle of women who have carried me through this week. They say ‘empowered women empower women,’ but I’ve learned that empowered women also comfort women. A heartfelt thank you to the women who sent the flowers that brightened my room, the soups that nourished me, and the blankets that kept me wrapped in love. And a special shout out to the women healthcare workers in my life who took the best care of me! I also want to pay a special tribute to the women (and the supportive men) who have consistently checked in. I am grateful to be surrounded by people who truly believe in women supporting women. Today, I’m celebrating the village that reminds me I don’t have to be ‘strong’ all by myself.
