⚠️ In 2021, there were 19 major wildfire disasters globally — the third-highest number recorded in this century.
Batuhan Esirger was a volunteer during the worst-ever wildfire in Turkey and saw the devastating effects firsthand.
He co-founded @nowildfire less than a month later, with the goal of developing an early warning system that could detect forest fires within the first 15 minutes. By the end of the year, they had their first prototypes and patents in hand.

The relationship between Wildfires and Climate Change
🌎Unusual temperature values of global warming resulted in an extension of the fire season by three and a half months.
🌎Serious forest fires are caused by high temperatures and low rates of rainfall.
🌎When grass, bushes, and trees dry up, they turn into flammable fuel.
🌎While the drying of vegetation in the short term causes more fires, this potential decreases in long-term drought.
🌎However, burnt soil loses its ability to absorb rainwater and causes flooding.

Fire season has already begun for most of the geographical regions.
🔧While we assist with prevention efforts during this period, we also continue our prototyping studies on ForestGuard with the aid of 3D modeling and printing techniques.

What should be done when encountering a fire?
🚨 The location should be reported to the fire department immediately, as briefly and accurately as possible.
🚨 The battery of your mobile phone or other communication channels should be used sparingly cautiously.
🚨 The direction of the wind should be determined and the nearest open area should be reached.
🚨 When approaching burnt land, caution should be exercised against re-flares.
🚨 Clothing and shoes should be replaced with protective ones to reduce damage caused by sparks and ashes.

How can you protect a forest from devastating fires? 🌳
#RedesignEverythingChallenge winners ForestGuard @nowildfire detects forest fires within the first 15 minutes and notifies authorities, functioning independently from established infrastructure with a triad of sensor-based readings, solar panel charging, and satellite connection.
The ForestGuard team have not only developed a device for protecting forests, but also the technology necessary to maintain consistent and accurate monitoring—through their machine learning algorithm, it is possible to distinguish whether smoke detected in a forest originates from exhaust, a cigarette, or an actual forest fire.

🚨 According to the report of the United Nations Environment Program, the number of forest fires will increase by 50% by 2100. In Turkey, an area of 139,503 hectares, almost the size of London, disappeared in 2021. However, without despairing, we can join forces to solve this problem!
🚨 ForestGuard is a smart device developed to prevent forest fires. This device, which is mounted on trees with a flexible strap, instantly detects fires in the forest and reports them to the authorities, thanks to its digital nose. It allows fires to be extinguished before they grow with early intervention. You can be part of this solution and protect forests!
